Hello All,
I am planning a trip to S. Lake Tahoe in December and wondered if there were any suggestions for getting around there. We don't really want to rent a car and I looked at the local bus transportation, bluego, and it looks like they only go to Heavenly ski resorts, however we may want to go to other places as well, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Probably the only places you'll want to go are your hotel, the casinos, and the ski lift. Depending on the hotel, these may all be within walking distance of each other. In the summer I would say rent a car and drive around the lake and rent bikes and go hiking, but in winter, you might be happy without driving. There are plenty of restaurants in the casino/motel area, and plenty of cabs.
Agreed, most things in South Lake are within walking distance. Depending on where you stay, there may be coutesty shuttles. Regardless the front desk will be able to point you in the right direction.
If you want to go to some other locations around the lake [Incline Village, Trukee, etc.] without driving yourself, look up "TART" (Tahoe Area Regional Transit). They offer buses in/around the lake basin.
Being lucky enough to live at the lake for several years, and sharing lots of good times here with friends and family. If you're in central California or Northern Nevada, make sure you go up to the Lake (it's only about a 4-hour drive from the Bay Area). You'll be happy you did!
Accross from Heavenly Resort, above the T-Shirt shops there is a palmist/psychic woman. Apparently she is somewhat well known in the area and has had a few newspaper articles written about her. She lives above the shops in a small apartment. She does Tarot Cards, Palmistry and a few other areas. It is pretty interesting to venture up there and get a reading.
We had my birthday dinner here while in South Lake Tahoe the beginning of the month. A very small yet intimate dining room. Everything we had was very good and we brought in a bottle of 1996 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon to go with our dinner. Service was professional and friendly. We will return! The Lamb Shank, Prawns, Spinach Salad with Duck Confit and the Creme Brulee pie
Pope Beach along the south shore of Lake Tahoe is a really nice large beach. The sand and water are clean. There are plenty of restrooms, bbq's and picnic tables available.
No dogs allowed.
It costs $5 to park your car. During peak holiday periods (like 4th of July week) the parking lot is generally full by 12:30.

I would recommend renting a jet ski or perhaps taking a cruise around the lake on the paddle boat from the Zephyr Cove Beach.
This beach has sand, friendly Canadian Geese, beach volleyball, and shacks to buy snacks and drink (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). Their alcoholic shakers are a must for the size and price :)
