2 aussies on an adventure from Vegas driving!!

by Will74au

We are planning to drive from Vegas to Lake Tahoe in January. I see that it is a long trip but can anyone suggest the best and safest route? We live on the coast in Sydney so snow and chains are not common to us!! Any advice greatly appreciated!

That's a beautiful area - any time of the year. My only advice would be to read up on how to drive on snow or ice. It can be tricky - even for us who have done it many times. That said, snowy areas (especially tourist ones) usually take very good care of the roads and plow them well, put down salt and sand etc. Enjoy the views!

Not sure if a Vegas rental agency will have chains, their plastic now. You may want to have them ask their Reno office to help.
Chains are usually only for rear tires for traction. One of the more difficult things in snow is not going but stopping. If you start to slide, DON'T BRAKE HARD. Gear down to low and SLOWLY steer and SLOWLY brake.
Just go cafefully and stay to the right

Rear tires for chains unless you are driving a front wheel drive, then the front tires get the chains.

All good advice on driving in the snow. However, it is not the snow but the ice that is the problem. You are required by CA law to carry chains during the winter even if the roads are clear.

If the rental car agency won't rent them to you then find a local car parts store in LV before you leave and buy a set. They will be a lot cheaper in LV than any where else. Also you can find them in Target or Wal-Mart.

There are plenty of people "chain monkey's" who will install them for you at the chain control points if you get told to put them on. If you have never put them on before then use the experts.

Probably the best route from LV to LT is to go through Death Valley and then up Hwy 395. You can go north on Hwy 395 and take Hwy 89 north to South Lake Tahoe. Parts of 89 can close frequently due to snow. You can stay on Hwy 395 into Reno and over to north LT on Hwy 80. These roads are plowed almost it in the middle of blizzards.

You can stay on 395 to Minden NV and then take Hwy 207 over to south LT, but you have to double back a little.

If the weather is really bad then from LV go over to the central valley toward Bakersfield and then take Hwy 99 north to Sacramento and then Hwy 50 (SLT) or Hwy 80 (NLT).

Get a good map and check the CALTRANS www.dot.ca.gov or call the 800 # as you travel to check the status of roads. Main problem is once you leave LV you are pretty well committed to those roads as you can't really turn around and come back to Hwy 58 toward Bakersfield.

The drive along Hwy 395 on the east side of the Sierra Mountains is awesome. There are plenty of little towns and hotels where you can stop if the weather gets to bad.

Travel Tips for South Lake Tahoe

Mountain Biking

by DSwede

As with my biking post in nearby Incline Village, Tahoe is a wonderful place to go biking. Simply pick up a trail map and go.

However, if you dont have the time or the desire to search your own trail, the link below gives some good trails for mountain bikers. I've done all but one of the listed circuits (and others that are not listed), and they are all worthwhile.

Hit the trails in the link below or ask one of the bike shops for the closest access to the Tahoe Rim Trail. (not all of the 130 mile trail is open to bikers). Bring your own or rent from any one of the dozens of sports rental places in SLT.

Killer Highway!

by thebeatsurrender

On the way back to Reno from Tahoe (Hwy 50 to 395, I think), these signs started popping up on the side of the road, with messages ranging from the instructional "Slow down!" to the cryptic "RIP Here Lies So-and-so, Killed by Highway". I thought I had stumbled into some bad horror movie. You know... 3 young people on a desolate stretch of highway stumble across creepy little town with a ... dum dum dum .. .KILLER HIGHWAY!!! Eeeeeeaaaghhh!

Great Italian Food

by cwest03 about Scusa!

Found along Ski Run Blvd, just below Heavenly Scusa! is one of the better Italian restaurants in the area. With Scusa's friendly casual atmosphere you can't help buy enjoy yourself. This is the perfect place to eat with friends and family and is also a great place to take a date. You won't be disappointed. Some of my favorite dishes are the roasted garlic appetizer (you'd better like garlic) and the Chicken Saltenboca. The Salads are huge so if you order one with your dinner you had better be hungry. There are always specials and if you are lucky one of the specials will be the mushroom soup which is out of this world.

A long swim there, a hitched ride back

by freespirit13

After hiking down the mountain to go swimming in beautiful Emerald Bay of Lake Tahoe, we jumped off the wooden dock into cold, fish smelling water. We decided to ignore the sign on the beach that said "No Swimming to Island" and started swimming. About 20 minutes later, we got to Fanette island. The water is so clear, we could see our feet the entire way. So we climbed up the mountain to the rock "tea house" (I think that was its purpose, back in the day) and got a beautiful view of Lake Tahoe.

Fortunately, we didn't have to swim back (at that point, we were cold and a little dehydrated); 2 girls and their parents from Michigan were nice enough to give us a boat ride back.

Heavenly Ski Resort Gondola

by Tom_Fields

The gondola at the Heavenly Ski Resort offers one of the best views of Lake Tahoe. From the Deck top, one can see all but the northeastern corner of the lake. The gondola itself gives a pleasant ride as long as you're not afraid of heights.

The city-owned parking garage nearby has plenty of space.
