LAKE TAHOE SKIING: When to come for good snow, and few crowds
by swdke
Okay, well I know no one has a crystal ball, but if I were to look into coming to Lake Tahoe for a ski trip, when might be the time to come when there will be snow, good conditions, and minimal crowds? Appreciate your help. Thanks.

Here is a bunch of links for information. Just know that when the snow arrives, so will the crowds. No such thing as minimal crowds, during snow season.....

I used to live in Tahoe for many years. The trend, usually it snows early. Stops during the holiday season, then snows again. No problems during Feb. March is great because weather warms-up. Go during weekdays, for lesser crowds.

I grew up in Tahoe and my sister is still there, so I try to stay up to date as best I can.
As posted by Kernel, it usually snows early, then there is a lull.
In years past, it was a good sign to see the first snow around Halloween, but it would not stick and stay for long. The next snows would come around Thanksgiving (3rd week of Nov), and then the resorts could be operational early December.
But not knowing the year's trend, November and early December are not guaranteed. Late January and February will be the best snow. Take heed to avoid the winter break from schools if you do not want crowds. March and April are starting to get warmer and the snow is getting softer. If the winter was a good year for snow, later April and May is possible, but by then there are large bare patches.
Travel Tips for South Lake Tahoe
What do you want to do? This...

Seeing the sites along Highway 50!
by jose76
For those of you leaving California on the way to fabulous Lake Tahoe, I would suggest taking the highway 50 route as apposed to the 80. The 80 is more of the major 4 lane freeway to get you up and over the hills quickly to your destination, but you will pass a few good spots to stop and site see, mainly rest stops.
If you take the 50 route, it is only a two lane freeway for most of the trip through the mountains, but you will have plenty more sights to see, and more smaller shops and restaurants along the way, seeing more small towns where EVERYONE is nice along the way. If you would like to stop for lunch somehwere, I suggest (wouldnt think of it normally) stopping at a small sushi spot, "Sheila Sushi" in a town called "Camino". Better than any sushi I have had in the city, and you wont find it if you dont know its there. Its nesseled between the towns of Folsom and Placerville.
Once you have passed all these little towns with all the good sites, you are in for a good 45 minutes of perfect beautiful landscapes until you get over the last hill and see the lake right in front of you.
Charming Atmosphere and Great Food at Scusa
by curious_yank about Scusa on Ski Run
Recommended by a prior customer, I visited Scusa after making a 3 day advance reservation. (Reservation is highly advised. ) It is a small place that looks as though a house has been transformed into a rest. The people running the place are very friendly. Service was outstanding! Food was excellent as well. After having a very disappointing meal at the "Chart House"...Scuza was awesome! They had a nightly special of Sea Bass last night and I promised I would mention it in my report. They pan seared it to perfection and then presented it with a pineapple salsa. My mouth is watering as I think of it. they also gave us a taste of their "Garlic Bread Scusa"..and after dinner..they gave us a hot brownie covered with vanilla ice cream and homemade rasberry topping... this went well with the Chianti. Overall, a great dining experience!
Emerald Bay

Not much to do but what a view! It has the only island in the lake. Some lady built a "teahouse" on the island that her and friends would row out to in the summer. Part of the drive around the lake. lots of hiking trails around the area as well.
Farmer's Market
by TravelSimone
Between June 1 and early October, on Tuesday mornings from 8:00am to 1:00pm, there is a small Farmer's Market at the American Legion Hall.
It is a small market, but there are stalls which sell all the normal farmer's market items: fruits, vegetables, flowers, baked goods, crepes, oils, cheese, etc.
