Having never been to Tahoe, I have no idea what the weather is normally like there this time of year. But what's up with the 50 degree temps?! Is this typical? When does it usually cool down and snow? I'm coming in late January, so I don't think I have anything to worry about, but I'm just surprised that we have more snow and cold temps here in Ohio at this point. Glad to see Heavenly is at least open on the fake stuff. Any other resorts there open yet?

Re: Weather

Having grown up in Tahoe, while I have gone skiing before Halloween some years, that is not the norm.

Typically, the first snow fall around end of October.
The first snow accumulation starts around Thanksgiving.
The slopes open in December.

However, the last years, this has been shifting later and later.

Travel Tips for South Lake Tahoe

Pine Cones

by Geoff_Wright

I always like to take something 'natural' home with me, and usually it's a small pebble. But I came across this pine tree, with literally hundreds of huge cones under it. I just had to have one, so, over the fence I went, and the pine cone is now in my own lounge. What's more, it has seeds in it, which I'll try to grow later.

Afternote: I did plant some of the seeds, but unfortunately they never grew :O(((. But I did find two little pines in New Hampshire in theFall, and they do seem to have survived the travelling and the English winter!

Further Afternote!!. This Summer, two of those little seeds have suddenly decided to sprout and grow! They are only an inch or so high at the moment, but they will be well cared for over the Winter, along with those little pines from New Hampshire!

Say Hi to the Prospector!

Before the Nugget Casino in Reno went for the mega-casino-highrise look that is popular these days, this figure was one of 5 that were atop of the old casino. The owner of the neighboring Chocolate Factory bought this guy and moved him to their property. He's in bad shape: holes from purposeful damage and fading from many years in the sun. He's over 2 stories tall and really stands out among the lower buildings along this rural stretch of road.

Of course, we readily noted an .... um ... anatomical anomaly of this gent. But we still lke him (or her).

Of course, since you are there anyways - stopping in to the Chocolate Factory for a little munchie is also in order ;) Their hand dipped chocolate covered icecream is divine .......huge and divine .... *sigh*

Location:611 US Hwy 395 N., Washoe Valley, NV
Outside the Chocolate Nugget Candy Factory. Southbound side of US 395, near the north end of Washoe Lake, midway between Reno and Carson City.

Good food and cozy!

by Yaqui about Goodfellas Pizza

We were looking for a place to eat, but in this town all the restaurants are busy or people waiting in line to eat. So I spotted this place because my boys were ready to eat eachother. It is a very small place, but the pizza was good. The boys were happy with their meals and so were we. We had meatball sandwiches and they were good. It was kind of expensive, but the place was clean. Not a lot of tables, but the booths they had were very long that would probably seat at least four adults on each side. Nice little place!

Emerald Bay: The Jewel of Lake Tahoe

by Tom_Fields

Here is one of the most scenic , and popular, spots along Lake Tahoe. You can hike it or see it by boat. I did both. It has excellent trails, a lovely beach, and Vikingsholm

Vikingsholm is a home built by Lora Josephine Knight. She hired an architect to visit Scandanavia and construct a home in the authentic Scandanavian style. He also had to avoid damaging any of the trees. It's a remarkable piece of work, one of the best examples of Scandanavian architecture in the US.

Near Vikingsholm is Eagle Falls, a beautiful waterfall overlooking the lake. The trail up to it is short but steep.

Also, keep a lookout for ospreys. These birds of prey, also called fisheagles, are very common along the lakeshore. As the name implies, they eat fish out of the lake.

Emerald Bay - and other vistas

by Pounder73

Emerald Bay, a California underwater state park, is one of the most popular vista points around Lake Tahoe. And where the Vikingsholm resides, a cool little Scandinavian Tea-house on the only island in the Lake. But you can’t really see it, so don’t worry.
