april skiing conditions

by michelleava

we were booked at mammoth from april 6 but have been told Squaw and nearby resorts would be just as good for spring skiing. Is this right? We are locked into flying into Reno and would then drive to mammoth, so it probably makes more sense to do tahoe. We are advanced skiiers. I know Squaw is famous for good April snow but which other nearby resorts would you recommend? Are they all the same in terms of weather and snow conditions or are some more vulnerable to earlier icey or slushy conditions? I was told heavenly is good in april.

I'm not certain why you'd fly to Reno to ski Mammoth, but...

I'm biased but in 35 years of CA skiing, I've only skiied Heavenly maybe 5 times. I'm partial to Squaw, Alpine and Diamond Peak. Northstar has some pretty good advanced runs but they tend to be rather short. Diamond Peak, is a great "small resort" but again is not as large as Squaw and Alpine. I've skiied well past April in good snow years and would favor any of them over Mammoth. Kirkwood is a bit of a drive but it too offers some great terrain.

I'd say all will suffer a bit of slush if the sun hits hard. The larger resorts will have more equipment out earlier to groom. Also, they have more terrain to offer when one slope gets skiied out.

I enjoy North Star for the village more than the skiing. Staying on the North Shore and you also have Mt. Rose which is the closest to Reno. See their website: http://www.mtrose.com/

Travel Tips for South Lake Tahoe

When is the best snow

by DSwede

It usually snows early, then there is a lull. In years past, it was a good sign to see the first snow around Halloween, but it would not stick and stay for long. The next snows would come around Thanksgiving (3rd week of Nov), and then the resorts could be operational early December.

But not knowing the year's trend, November and early December are not guaranteed. Late January and February will be the best snow. Take heed to avoid the winter break from schools if you do not want crowds. March and April are starting to get warmer and the snow is getting softer. If the winter was a good year for snow, later April and May is possible, but by then there are large bare patches.

Sierra at Tahoe

by tahoesasha

Sierra at Tahoe is one of the 10 resorts surrounding the lake and one of the main 3 at the south end (Kirkwood, Heavenly are the others). Sierra is a small but very decent mountain with a very casual, fun atmosphere and it's only a 20-30 minute drive from town.

Riva Grill- Right on the Lake

by TravelSimone about Riva Grill

Riva Grill is part of the restaurant family that consists of Gar Woods on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, and also Kimos in Maui, Hawaii.

The food is classic American with something for everyone. They have pastas, steak, chicken, salads, a wide variety of appetizers and desserts.

The best thing about Riva Grill is its location and huge deck right on the lake.

The worst thing about Riva Grill is that you pay a fairly steep price for the location. The food is generally good, but it isn't top of the line to go along with the prices. (But then again... I am from San Francisco, where we tend to get a little snobby about food.) My favorite items tend to be the appetizers eaten along with a good cocktail right on the deck.

Great Pizza & Sandwiches

by jumpingwithnorman about Bob Dog Pizza

Bob Dog Pizza has taken over Tahoe by storm. They do have the great food to back it up plus 3 convenient locations in & around Tahoe... They're even served at the Tahoe Bowl! Very, very cool... Their original hole-in-the-wall location near Myers Station has been expanded so they have a great room where you can hang out and play pool or foosball. Meatball sandwich, any of their pizzas.

Heavenly Village

by newsphotogirl

A small shopping area with a movie theater. It's a nice little area to grab a bite to eat and sit outside. There are some clothing stores and restaurants. We ate at Wolfgang Pucks in their little outdoor area. Afterwards we stopped at Coldstone Creamery and sat out in the sun people watching.
