The place stinks, literally

We stayed one night in Jan 2008. As soon as we entered the lobby, there was an overwhelming smell of mildew. Our room in the same building as the lobby also stunk very badly of mildew. Management was unprofessional - the manager was always seen sitting on the couch in the lobby and chatting about personal matters on his cell phone. We had a room with a kitchen and dining area - everything was just old and run down. We were supposed to stay 2 nights but left a day early as the mildew smell was starting to make us sick. The place needs major renovation and the price to stay there is high given the conditions. I would not stay there again.

Irresponsible

We booked two nights (June 24 and 25) at the Royal Valhalla Motor Lodge online, a week before we arrived at South Lake Tahoe. We arrived on June 24 and attempted checking in, but the hotel staff told us the hotel was overbooked and that we would not be able to stay there. Since June 24 was a Saturday, most hotels in South Lake Tahoe had no vacancy that night. We were reassigned from Royal Valhalla Motor Lodge to Thunderbird Inn. Originally, we booked a room at the Royal Valhalla because it had been given three stars by AAA; Thunderbird Inn is not an AAA recommended lodging. We were not the only ones who had this problem; at least three or four other groups of people had to be reassigned to other lodgings. Royal Valhalla is a very irresponsible hotel that shouldn't receive the buisness of most travelers.

Stateline/Lakeside Lodging

The Royal Valhalla Motor Lodge is right on the California/Nevada boarder, across the street from the lake, a few minutes walk to the casinos and close to skiing. Rooms in this lodge are typical of most motels in the area; small and a bit dated decor but comfortable. You're paying for the convenience of being close to everything so don't expect to get a lot for the price that you're paying. The Royal Valhalla is a bit unique in that it is close to just about everything that you would want to do while in Tahoe in either summer or winter. They even have their own pool and private beach.

The one thing that would keep me from staying here again or recommending this hotel to anyone else is the service. The people at the front desk were not very friendly nor were they helpful. They were very short with me and were less than helpful to another couple that we were with when they tried to use the in room phone. There are so many other hotels in the area that it shouldn't be very hard to find something comparable the next time we go up to Tahoe.

Unique Quality: The only unique things about the Royal Valhalla is the location and poor service.
