pre-christmas ski trip

by canadianskier

Hi there,
I am planning to take my two teenage sons on a California ski adventure. We have chosen Lake Tahoe region and know very little about your area. Our plan is to arrive Dec. 15 or 16. Is there good snow conditions there this early most years?
And can you recommend a nice cabin type accommodation or condo at least two bedroom. From what I've read North Tahoe is where we want to be for the ski season.
Any help you could give to make this a trip to remember would be appreciated.

Casinos are the attraction in South Lake Tahoe with Heavenly Ski Resort the most popular, but with teenagers the North Lake Tahoe area would seem a better fit. Northstar at Tahoe, Squaw Valley, Sugar Bowl, and very powdery Mt. Rose are all great ski and snowboarding areas. Incline Village, on the Nevada side, has great lodging and is close to Northstar and Mt. Rose. A travel site with info on skiing, lodging, dining, and nightlife is: http://www.tahoeactivities.com/ski_resorts.cfm?

North Tahoe is a little less expensive for accommodations especially the weekend rates that seem to skyrocket in South Tahoe. I assume because of all the weekenders coming from SFO. I agree that the ski areas in North Tahoe are better as well.

Hi! You've picked my favorite place on the planet! Regarding good snow conditions, most likely there will be snow; however, last year California in general had very little precipitation so it's hard to say how the snow will be--two years ago Tahoe had record snowfall and last year was below average. I would say that your chances for a great time are very high! My family, which includes 2 teens and a 10-year-old, loves the north shore and the ski areas mentioned, especially Squaw Valley (site of 1960 Olympics) which also has an ice-skating rink at the top. Squaw also has a great Village at the base of the mountain. All the wonderful ski areas of Tahoe are just a short distance away, so you can try most of them, especially Heavenly on the South Shore. As for a place to stay, Incline Village is our favorite. I would strongly recommend renting a 2 bedroom condo in the McCloud complex--you will love the ambiance! The condos are well-kept up and beautiful. We stay there every year. Try googling the North Tahoe Resort Association, Tanager Realty or Goldfish Properties--all in Incline Village. We have used them all and been very happy. Also check www.vrbo.com-- (Vacation Rental By Owner) and search for McCloud in Incline Village. Forest Pines condos in Incline are also nice if you can't find a McCloud available. Reserve now--things book up really fast. Let me know if I can answer other questions--Tahoe is wonderful!

Travel Tips for South Lake Tahoe

Kayaking Lake Tahoe

by hokeypokey

Thereýs lotýs of different kinds of water sports. Water skiing, jetboats, canoeing, surfing and kayaking are some. Locations to rent equipment can be found in almost every corner around the lake and itýs wonderful to spend some time out on the lake. Plus it gives you some excercise of course. You may want to bring your swimmers. Everything else will be taken care of. If you are not familiar with the kind of sport you just chose you will get an instruction on how to react or how to steer...
Have fun!

searching where bears hibernate!

by fmgl

it's best to walk around sides of the lake and watch "otter" like creatures, but it gets awfully cold. I love to go to quaint coffee shops when i feel im close to freezing...about the bears, they are all over, some people(adventurous ones) gets to find where they hibernate. Snow mobiling is so much fun too.

Great Little Locals Place!

We had a very good breakfast here on our last day in South Lake Tahoe. I had the banana pancakes which were perfectly made, fresh orange juice, maple syrup. My husband had an omelette which he said was very good, served with toast and hash brown potatoes. Service is very friendly and the majority of the people in the diner knew each other. We bought some souvenirs here, also. Banana pancakes with maple syrup

Boarding/skiing. One of my favorite places to go is Northstar. I love and hate this place.
Lovely condos, quite weekend rentals. Board right to your front door. The runs are good, but stick to the backside during peak periods. This place swarms during the holidays. I hate the crowds. If you're gonna stay frontside, I'd stick with Pinball. FYI, food is not that great here. What I usually do is, in town, there are several really good delis. Just pack up a lunch, store it in your bag.

Heavenly Village Mini Golf/Ice Skating Rink

by Yaqui

What is so unique is during summer months this is a 18 hole mini golf course and during the winter months it converts to a ice skating rink. It looks like a wonderful place to spend the day, plus it gives some fun things to do for the kids.
