Beautiful scenery
As I mentioned previously, I cut across the Luther Pass and into Nevada before exploring Lake Tahoe. This photo is taken on Route 89, somewhere near the Luther Pass. Nice car! (my Ford Focus hire car, hehe).

My husband & I will be staying in Reno for a few days the middle of November. We would like to rent a car & take a drive to Lake Tahoe & around the lake area. We would like to go to both North & South Tahoe but I am concerned about the road conditions. I have only been to Tahoe once & the roads look like they could be scarey during the winter. Does anyone know what the normal weather is like in November? We were going to rent just a small car not a 4WD. Is that a bad idea?
Thanks!
Good idea but only if you bring tire chains along. North Shore gets colder than the South Shore. The roads are mostly kept in good condition but can get tricky if it starts to rain and it turns to snow. You would be wise to check with the weather service before heading up either Mt. Rose Hwy or I-80 to Truckee over to Lake Tahoe.
If it snows while you're driving, you will need 4-wheel drive. Most rental companies don't want you using chains on their tires. If I were you, I would rent a 4-wheel drive car, but change it a few days ahead of time if the forecast is for good weather. If the weather is really bad, you should stay in Reno.
We have snow predicted tonight! . . . and it's only October 3.
Check weather and see if you want to do it. They keep the roads pretty well plowed so unless there's a major storm, you should be fine. If you don't buy chains and you need them, you will have to buy them on the road and they will overcharge you like crazy. I'd check ahead to see if the rental company will let you use chains and if you could rent chains with the car. Even if you have 4-wheel drive, you will have to have chains so you might as well get a small fuel-efficient car and save some money.
When chains are required, they are required and you will be stopped. You will see people stopped in the middle of the road putting on chains. There will also be plenty of people to help you put yours on (for a price, of course). If you don't want to deal with it, just stay in Reno and enjoy the city and the views of the surrounding mountains. 8^)
If you can do it, it is a stunning drive!

A STRENUOUS and MAGNIFCENT summer or winter hike up 9,770 foot Mt.. Tallac famous for the "cross" formation below its tip. (Base is at 6,225 feet). In winter the cross fills with snow and extremely twisted people launch skis off the summit and ski the cross into the bowls below. A good 6 hour round trip trek in the summer. Look up more detail in a Lake Tahoe guidebook or adventure website. See the big blue from way up above.
If it wasn't for The Naked Fish, Off the hook would be my number one choice for food in South Lake Tahoe (if you like Japanese that is). A bit less pricey than the Naked Fish, Off The Hook has some excellent maki rolls. The Sake list could be better. Rolls
Lake Tahoe looks like a rounded square in satellite photos, except for one bay that protrudes three miles into the mountains. The bay is called Emerald bay and it has also the only island in the lake, Fannette Island.
The ring road around the lake goes very near the bay and there are a couple of good spots to park your car and enjoy the breathtaking views high above the waterlevel. One of the areas has informative posters about the history of the lake and the bay.
There is a beach at the end of the bay, and it is accessible from one of the parking slots. The water is cold even during summertime, but a dip may refreshen you after you have walked down in California heat. Unfortunately, you may get sweaty when climbing back up.
There are so many hiking trails around Lake Tahoe - all of them with breathtaking views. There are short hikes that are even suitable for children, and there are day-long-hikes which would take you all the way to the magnificent peaks of the Tahoe Sierras. My favorite short/easy hike is the hike to the upper eagle falls (maybe around 30 min one way). The trailhead is across the highway from Inspiration Vista Point (Emerald Bay vista point on Highway 89). My favorite day-long hike is Mt Tallac, and next is Ralston Peak (along Highway 50).
