Driving Condition in Lake Tahoe on April 10

by RAZOR0303

Whats is the driving/road conditions in Lake Tahoe on April 10 the past 2 years?

Re: Driving Condition in Lake Tahoe on April 10

Depends on the day of the week. It snowed quite a bit this year. If you're making plans for next year, I'd check http://www.tahoebest.com/weather/ for forecasts and actuals. It also has pointers back to back posts for historic snow fall.

Do you need specific historic information or are you trying to get an idea of what the weather will be like on April 10, 2010? Honestly, you could have any kind of weather. It is very unpredictable that time of year (and right now). If you are driving there, do what a previous poster suggested and check the weather right before you go . . . and realize it may not be accurate either.

There is a strong possibility of snow in early April . . . but no guarantee of it.

They do get the roads cleaned very quickly after a snowfall but you may need chains on your car. If they are required, police check all the cars and you will not be allowed to continue without them. If you are renting, see if they will include chains if the weather is predicted to be snowy.

On the more unpleasant side, if there is a major blizzard, the roads may be closed. It happens so have an alternative plan.

Travel Tips for South Lake Tahoe

Joan Lee braced against the...

by JeanCooke

Joan Lee braced against the cold weather on the Lake in winter.

NORTH LAKE TAHOE has more ski resort choices. My favorite ski resorts are:

NORTHSTAR - off 267. Avoid Friday, Saturday, Sunday and possibly Mondays if you like less crowded slopes with more adult skiers. Northstar is a favorite of families with children because of many activity levels. The trails are well groomed. Beginners to Advanced skiiers will enjoy a great selection of trails and terrain. The Backside offers more challenging trails. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursdays are good to try group ski lessons. My twin sister, Joan, and I lucked out as the only 2 participants in level 5, so essentially got a 2 hour private lesson for the group rate; a savings of $220!

ALPINE Ski Resort on route 89 offers diverse well groomed trails with more adult skiiers. Advanced and mogul ski lovers will enjoy the alpine terraine. One of my favorite areas.

SUGAR BOWL off of route 80 by Truckee is blessed with plenty of snow when other resorts are making theirs. Sugar Bowl offers everything for any level of skiier.

SKI INCLINE is in Incline Village. (Also known as Diamond Peak). Spectacular views of Lake Tahoe greet the skier just off the lift. Skiing down the ridge, the illusion is you can just ski off a slope right into the Lake. Bring your camera. The bad part, is there is not the diversity of trails that less picturesque resorts offer. MT. ROSE Ski Resort off 431 on the way to Reno is at higher elevation and blessed with snow. The winds can e fierce so check weather reports. The view of Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley in Nevada are great. A 2 hour private lesson here cost as little as a group lesson at Northstar. The skiers tend more toward adult. The amenities are on the minimal side compared to other resorts. There is a loyal group who likes skiing Mt. Rose. Sunrise and sunsets over Lake Tahoe as the water changes hues of salmon to reds in concert with the ski and surrounding snowy peaks.

AVOID speedboats and other noisy pollutants!

by goura

Speed boats, excessive cruises, snow mobiles in winter, and other noisy, polluting devices are killing off the beautiful wildlife and clean surroundings. Do everyone a favor and use canoes or kayaks on the water, and do Not bother the bears by taking a peak at where they hibernate or getting too close so as to disturb any other wildlife. Due to global warming and excessive boat/driving toys people have used lately, Lake Tahoe is warming and fish and wildlife are dying.
Please enjoy the beauty of the nature and do not pollute the lake with garbage and excessive gasoline and oils. Go to Reno if you want noise..
Thank you!

Lake Side Dining

by lmkluque about Lakeside Beach Grill

The restaurant had a split personality, as I usually like. First impression typed this as upscale country club casual. Expected the prices to be on the higher side, but fair for the offering and they were.

The "split personality" comes to play in the treatment and attitude of the employees. Many upscale restaurants think too highly of themselves and employees seem ready to "snub." However, though the location, decor and food quality would satisfy the "snobbish" crowd, the employees were helpful, friendly and gracious. That and a lakeside dining deck, with it's view of the lake and the setting sun, made this my favorite place in Tahoe! Favorite dish? There were several choices that made the decision difficult, but we settled on Shrimp Scampi, in honor of Michael, an old friend, who once taught us the sensual way of eating scampi.

Vikingsholm

by jholley534

Vikingsholm Castle was built as a summer home by Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight in 1929. She purchased the property encompassing the head of Emerald Bay and Fannette Island in for a total of $250,000. It is nestled in the Emerald Bay State Park and is noted for its outstanding architectural and scenic location. It is referred as one of the finest examples of Scandinavian architecture in the western hemisphere.

Parking is available in the Vikingsholm parking lot off of Highway 89. Be prepared to hike the very steep, one-mile, paved trail in order to get down to Vikingsholm. Tours of Vikingsholm Castle are available seven days a week from mid-June until the end of September. The first tour of the day starts at 10:00 A.M. and the last tour at 4:00 P.M. All tours are guided tours and take approximately one-half hour.

Mountain scenery

by jessicadf

While you drive along, and you've convinced your friend to drive and you're simply a passenger, make sure to take in the view. Some of the most beautiful scenery I know is along the way to South Lake Tahoe, as you near Echo Summit.
