Travel Tips for Sutter Creek

A lively goldrush town

Sutter Creek is a very well preserved gold rush town. Named after Johann Augustus Suter, the town has the Knight's Foundry, the only hydraulic powered foundry in the United States. It is registered as historic landmark.

The town is really pretty and I recommend to park your car and stroll around along the main street. If you have the time, take it to have a look at the Knight's Foundry as well as at the J. Monteverde General Store.

Knight's Foundry

The sign of the landmark Knights Foundry says the following:

' Knight Foundry was established in 1873 t osupply heavy equipment and repair facilities to the gold mines and timber industry of the mother lode. Samual N. Knight developed a high speed, cast iron water wheel which was a forerunner of the Pelton wheel design. Knogzht wheel were used in some of the first hydroelectric plants in California, Utah and Oregon.

This site is the last hydropowered foundry and mashine shop in California. A 42 inch Knight wheel drives the main line shaft, with smaller water motors powering other mashines.
