Travel Tips for Truckee

Truckee is colder than other Tahoe Basin areas

by DSwede

Truckee has a reputation of being a few degrees colder than the other areas of the Lake Basin. I can't tell you exactly, but since you've never seen snow before, you may want to make sure your friend has a few spare hats and gloves since you may find it cold. Nights can drop to be -10/-15C (5/15F) quite easily and day time temperatures vary because the sun is very strong there. Days in winter can be between -10C (15F) and +25C (75) . However I have seen even more extremes...

"Truckee - Great Little Town"

Listen to the peaceful silence of mountains .....
The green embrace of trees ......
The pristine chill of alpine lakes ......

Truckee was a great little historical town we visited while we were
staying in Reno. It is well worth the visit as it is not far from Reno.
We recommend you plan it a a 1/2 day trip, as the town is small.
There are some great places to enjoy lunch while you are there.

Truckee is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California,
just west of the Nevada state line - elevation: 5899 ft / 1798 m

Donner Lake is located within the Town Limits and Donner Pass over the
summit of the Sierra Nevada is just west of Town. Interstate 80, the major
east-west trans-Sierra "all-weather" highway, passes through the Town on
its way between California and Nevada ....

"Jackass Ridge Merchantile"

Truckee holds an enduring history, recorded
from the cool grey morning of time.

This song of wilderness unconquered changed
with encounters of a roughly civilized nature, when
a young America stretched to explore her physical
boundaries, to discover her potential as a nation.

When a small mountain town named Truckee came
to be. Some journeyed here with silent note; others,
with legendary force. But all who passed this way left
a mark, forming a definition of our world.

It is the traveler who decides what one’s mark should
tell to those who follow ....

"Christmas 2005 In Truckee"

In Truckee, 1893 meets 2005 in a historically rich
mountain town, where innovative charms give
rise to enormous potential.

Here, you can believe in the certainty of leisure well
spent. In a business prospect realized.

In a life beautifully redirected. Truckee is adventure
discovered, so far from everything that you know,
so close to everything that you want ....

Truckee

by Agraichen

Only to the trained eye has this scene changed in the last #%# (we dont' count) years. But...those that read about shoping hints and that know the area will know...

This is the "street scene) of the first block of Truckee. The building in the foreground used to house "the first and last chance saloon." In the "old days" it was the last saloon heading west and the first heading east according to Truckee history.

Today, more modern "tourist traps" exist in Truckee....you have to look close for "the catch" which reads "free beer - tomorrow."

Just down the street is the "infamous" OB's Pub that I' ve been frequenting for 30 years that I know of...perhpaps OB's libations have shortened my memory but since I only arrived in Truckee for the first time in October 1974, I think not.

The eagle roosts just to the right of the old "Depot."

THE DEPOT...Built in 1896 the monument just outside the depot commemorates the first transcontinental railroad. "The railroad" reached Truckee on April 3, 1868.

And for those people heading east from Truckee....It's a long way to Utah. But in it's own way, it is very picturesque.
