Travel Tips for Twentynine Palms

What to Bring?

by JauntBoy

Your old duffel bag or a new American Tourister -- you decide! Spring/Summer/Fall -- Shorts, sandals, T-shirts, short-sleeved dress shirts and polos. A light jacket and jeans/slacks would also be appropriate in early spring and late fall.

Winter -- Jacket, sweaters, sweatshirts, slacks and jeans. Make sure to bring along a good pair of hiking boots/shoes! Sunscreen!

The local grocery stores and Rite-Aid have all of the items you'll need. We don't have a camera shop in town, so bring everything you want or need. Rite-Aid and Stater Bros. do carry film, and Rite-Aid also processes film, albeit the generic, Wal-Mart way. Camping supplies can be found at our local grocery and drug stores, but bring tents, lanterns, sleeping bags, etc. Bring an adventurous spirit!

"And -- It's Okay to be Gay in Twentynine Palms!"

What can I say? The Morongo Basin and Twentynine Palms are definitely the best-kept secrets in the Mojave. Clean air, starry nights, awesome sunsets, and the arts all combine to make 29 a great place to visit.

A sizable, and growing, GLBT community can be found here. It's not Palm Springs, but that's what makes this area so great!

Homesteading in 29 Palms circa 1950.

"Climate…for outdoor living"

The Twentynine Palms area has been pronounced the most health giving in the United States and many of its original settlers who came in quest of relief from physical ailments give proof in their vigorous activities today. The area became a haven for health-seekers shortly after World War I when a committee headed by James B. Luckie, M.D., of Pasadena made a survey to find a region that would provide aid to veterans afflicted with respiratory infections, arthritis, heart trouble and other ailments. Following the survey Twentynine Palms was the most healthful to be found and 28 veterans took up residence. Of the number, 26 recovered and the news spread of the health-giving properties of sun and air in Twentynine Palms. More veterans and scores of physically handicapped individuals headed for Twentynine Palms to find relief and cures for their ailments. Many of the pioneer health-seekers are today leaders in business, civic and organizational affairs of the community. The American Legion Post of Twentynine Palms had its founding by the health-finding veterans.
