Desert Wonderland Retreat: Virtually in the Middle of Nowhere

Come visit a quiet, peaceful, isolated wonderland of beauty, wildlife, and enchantment in Wonder Valley, California, at the foot of Joshua Tree National Park. Featured in the San Francisco CHRONICLE, Desert Wonderland is wilderness on the outside, sweet and comfortable on the inside. One-bedroom cabin with tiled mosaic shower, complete kitchen, woodburning stove, and air cooler. Excellent stargazing at night! Beautiful sunrises and sunsets. No phone or TV.

Artist and photographer Perry Hoffman created, in 2003, a wonderous desert retreat. He designed and worked hands-on with tile, grout and some local craftsmen to create the ideal retreat for himself and others like him. Bring your watercolors or sketch pad.

Desert Wonderland is located seven miles from the city of Twentynine Palms and the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. With 360 degree views amid the peace and quiet, beauty and wonder, Perry created a stimulating, yet restful desert environment. Simple design mixed with intricate patterns excite the eye. Touches of luxury, whimsy, and function make the visitor feel safe but also adventurous. Begin your holiday from stress with no TV or phone, only true quiet.

Inside, Perry's signature tile work on all floors and shower room, full kitchen, coffee maker, mixing bowls, woodburning stove, cooler, queen-size bed, picture windows, cotton linens, towels, record player and a beautiful selection of fine records.

Outside, flagstone porches sit in the middle of the vast and open desert. You need not walk two feet to be a part of the wilderness. Jackrabbits, cottontails, ravens, scorpions, desert iguana, snakes, gambel's quail, lesser night hawks, owls, coyotes, roadrunners, sphinx moths and kangaroo rats, flash floods, dust devils, lightning storms, summer rains, empty roads, wildflowers and cacti are some of things you might happen to see. Walk gently in nature. At night, absorb the clear, starry skies and view the August Perseid and November Leonid meteor showers.

Cradled inside an inspiring work of art, you find yourself situated in complete silence -- watching desert light crawl across the vast and intricate landscape around you. You are completely alone in the middle of nowhere and yet at the center of something amazing . . . the universe.

Moon Way Lodge: Under the Milky Way

Enjoy 360° mountain views, endless star-filled nights and sunny days by the private pool at Moon Way Lodge. Located in the heart of Wonder Valley, you will be surrounded by miles and miles of untouched Mojave Desert. The lodge is at the gateway to Joshua Tree National Park, Mojave National Preserve, and the proposed Route 66 "Mother Road National Monument."

Get back to nature in the outdoor shower, or cozy up with a book in front of the electric fireplace or outdoor fire pit. Watch the sunset or sunrise from the second-story covered loft.

The exposed 14' wood-beam ceilings make the interior warm and inviting. The decor is eclectic and tasteful. Everything you need for a fun get away is here for you! Just bring your food and free spirit--the desert will provide the rest. Only 10 minutes from Twentynine Palms/Joshua Tree National Park, 1 hour from Palm Springs, 3 hours from Los Angeles, San Diego, and Las Vegas, and 5 hours from Phoenix. Just 40 minutes to Amboy on historic Route 66!

The Lodge will accommodate 4-8 people if both the full rollaway & sofa bed are used. There are no separate bedrooms. The Parlor is one large room with a King bed, optional full rollaway bed, living/dining area, kitchenette (no oven/stove), bathroom with huge 5'x5' shower, and private deck. The Green Room is a smaller room with a Queen bed, full sofa bed, kitchenette (no oven/stove), bathroom with huge 5'x5' shower, and private deck. We will allow up to 8 people to stay but it will be a tight squeeze. Last-minute discounts available.
