A Unique Bed and Breakfast Getaway

Away from city traffic and noise, Roughley Manor has all the charm of a country chalet. Owner Jan Peters is an accomplished chef -- her desserts are legendary. I guarantee a restful night's sleep and a full tummy while staying here!

Unique Quality: Elizabeth and Bill Campbell used native stone to build Roughley Manor way back in 1924. It has been home to many folks over the years, most notably Allie Wrubel, writer of the classic songs "Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah" and "The Lady from 29 Palms." Lots of history in this place!

Directions: Head east on CA-62, past the stoplight in d'town 29. Go one mile to Utah Trail (blinking yellow light), and turn left. Head north about 1/2 mile, turn right onto Joe Davis Drive. Go another 1/2 mile to the entrance of Roughley Manor, on the left.

If you like potpourri and 'Bed and Breakfasts', this is the desert retreat for you. The Roughly Manor is such an odd and interesting place to find in the desert. Dark, cool interiors full of woodwork and lace. Very comfortable rooms and a reservoir for a swim.

More about Roughley Manor

Wonderful Oasis

by A TripAdvisor Member

Roughley Manor is clearly a labor of love by owners Jan and Gary Peters. The rooms are large, well maintained, and nicely furnished. The decor is tasteful and not overdone. The grounds are well kept with comfortable outdoor furniture under the palms in front and on the lawn in the back. A new swimming pool and hot tub are welcome relief at the end of a day of desert exploration and there are big terricloth robes and large beach towels in the bath house to increase one's comfort. The property is 25 acres so is quiet and private.

The breakfasts in the great room were excellent and done with care. (You don't just get French Toast, you get French Toast with praline crust or stuffed with fruit. A fruit dish is dressed with a multi-step home made sauce, etc.) Afternoon tea is accompanied by home made cookies and pies which stay out until 9pm. We had a great three days there.

At some B&Bs I feel that I am compelled to fall over myself complementing the owners on their good taste, etc. However, at Roughley Manor the owners seem much more interested in making their guests happy than in getting complements. They got the complements anyhow, but well deserved ones.

No words needed...but I'll try

Five stars just isn't enough to rate Roughley Manor. It is our third trip there since 2000. Roughley Manor is the most relaxing B&B I have ever been to, and I have been to a lot over the years. A new addition of the salt water pool and hot tub make this place even better. You don't ever want to set foot off the grounds or even leave your luxuriosly big comfy room. We try to include 29Palms when we travel to California, and stay at Roughley Manor. I'm not sure if we go now to visit Joshua Tree NP or see Jan & Gary, but we look forward to seeing both. If you're lucky, you'll get to try Jan's reknowned Banana Cream Pie. Jan & Gary make everyone feel so at home that those fortunate enough to have the time book another night. I will definitely be back again and again and again...

Truly an Oasis in Desert!

by A TripAdvisor Member

We just came back from our trip to Joshua Tree National Park and we stayed at Roughley Manor. The place was absolutely gorgeous and everything was beyond my expectation. We've been to many five star hotels and this place was as good as any other and even better considering the place's rich history, exceptional care and personal touch by the owners Jan and Gary Peters. It was the best B&B we've ever been to and we were so surprised to find such a place in the middle of the desert. (The location is just a minute from Joshua tree national park, so it was very convenient.) We had the most romantic time at Roughley Manor and we plan to go back very soon.

Amazing and close to the USMC Base

Not knowing anything about this part of CA and as a US Government Employee, I called the 29 Palms Marine Base and asked for recommendations for a place to stay for a couple of days. They recommended Roughley Manor B&B. It is in The Joshua Tree Nat'l Forest area of Twentynine Palms, a destination for many.
I was greated by the Inn Keeper on my arrival and I was put up in the Farm House [--------] What a great setting. The breakfast were great, the Inn Keepers were very plesant and Jan's Breakfast were wonderful. My wife was very jealous

What a find!

We found this wonderful B&B on the web and we are so glad we did - it was truly one of the best we have stayed at in the USA, and we have stayed in a lot! Gary and Jan were so helpful and charming, nothing was too much trouble and the lovely big, airy room with every comfort was just what we needed after travelling across the desert and going round Joshua Tree NP.
The breakfast was a work of art and very tasty!
We loved Sarah, the dog, and also were delighted to see road runners and humming birds in the garden - neither of which do we get in UK. For quality, comfort and a warm welcome this is the place to stay.

A True Oasis

by TripAdvisor Member miamitrinket

We recently enjoyed our second stay at Roughley Manor and were once again impressed with the lovely atmosphere and attention to detail.

The property is gracefully restored & nurtured by owners and innkeepers Gary & Jan. Sitting amid palm trees and Tamarisk trees that shade the yard and catch the breeze we sipped coffee in the morning then indulged ourselves with a terrific breakfast.

We have had the privelge of seeing almost all of the rooms on the property and could not decide which we liked the best - the Campbell Suite upstairs in the main house or the lovely room in the restored barn building nearby.

Our time at Roughley Manor feels like being hidden away from the noise and stress of living in a crowded southern California. We look forward to our next visit.

Fabulous Roughley Manor

by TripAdvisor Member 2marinesmom

We've just spent a wonderful week at a true Oasis in the midst of the desert!

When our planned vacation to Palm Springs to visit our son prior to his departure to Iraq was abruptly changed requiring
us to find lodging closer to Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base, we reluctantly selected the Roughly Manor Bed and Breakfast.

As it turned out, we could not have found a more perfect place to spend our week!

Roughley Manor steeped with history, offers unbelievable views of the high desert and is a delightful mix of elegance and comfort. Our room was exquisitely decorated yet so comfortable and inviting! We felt as though we were at home! The beautifully maintained grounds provided so many different areas to enjoy from the rose garden, poolside or just sitting under the huge Tamarisk Tree where the Owls make their home!

Each morning is met with much anticipation - What divine breakfast will she serve us today? Even the 21 year old girls
in our party reminded us every evening to make sure we wake them in time for 8:00 breakfast! We've requested a cookbook!!!

The day prior to our intended departure we decided to extend our stay! Even though the Manor was almost entirely booked up
Our Innkeepers made numerous last minute changes in order to accommodate us! No small task when you consider that our group took three rooms!

Lastly, we could not end our review without offering our sincerest appreciation to our Innkeepers! Jan & Gary thank you for making us feel so welcome and at home!

Perfect place to stay

My boyfriend and I were very impressed with Roughley Manor. It's a lovely property and our room was amazing. Very tasteful, large, luxurious and comfortable.

I would highly recommend this B&B to anyone visting the area.

There's a small pool and jacuzzi which is an added bonus. The breakfast was lovely and unobtrusive. Unlike most other B&B's, there's a small dining room for breakfast, with a lovely atmosphere and you get your own table.

The hosts were very friendly and accommodating. And we liked the resident roadrunner a lot.

For dining out, we had a great meal at the 29 Palms Hotel. Booking advisable - it was very busy (Saturday night).
