GRANT PARK CONSERVANCY

by LoriPori

Kat brought us way up on a hill as she wanted to show us GRANT PARK CONSERVANCY. Simply incredible views of the area could be seen up there.
The goal of the Conservancy is to preserve and maintain Serra Cross Park.
Also located up there is a huge cross which can be seen for miles. The first cross was erected in the late 1780's by Padre Junipero Serra and parishioners from San Buenaventura Mission, who wanted visitors to know the direction of where the Mission was in Ventura.
It was quite cool and windy up there, but it was so worth seeing. Thanks Kat for bringing us there.

Cycle the coast!

by ejvigil

Bring your bike or rent a bike and go to the end of Main Street. Turn in Emma Wood Group Camp Grounds and you'll see a bike path that rides along the Pacific Ocean. On clear days, the Islands look crystal clear and you can see the dolphins dancing in the distance. Awesome and easy ride!

You can also cycle the boardwalk along Seaside park! Fun times and great photos of local surfers chasing waves!

Surf's Up for ***in' Burgers--they are "Ono"

by keida84 about Duke's ***in' Burgers

Duke's (really that is the name of the restaurant) ***in' Burgers at the end of S Seward Avenue in Ventura is a solid local favorite. They open early to accomodate the hunger pangs of those folk were out catching a few waves. As the day progresses they break out the turkey and the ground beef and grill up some "ono" burgers.

Duke's is not fancy but you must have shirt, shorts and shoes if you plan to eat inside. Otherwise there is seating outside. My favorite things at Duke's are:

Breakfast: Fast Freddie: 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 pancakes

Lunch: Teriyaki Chicken Hawai'ian with sweet mustard and pineapple with either potato salad, fries or onion rings (1 choice not all :-))

Dinner: Turkey burger the 2 nd best in the whole of Ventura.

I have also been told the tacos are killer: Fish, chicken, or shrimp.

Olivas Adobe Historical Park--Haunted Ventura

by keida84

If you like haunted places then The Olivas Adobe is a must see when in the Ventura area, especially around Halloween when the Adobe offers ghost tours. The adobe has been listed in the National Directory of Haunted Places

4500 acres of land which were divided, were awarded to Don Raymundo Olivas and Felipe Loranzana in 1842 for services rendered as soldiers in the Mexican Army. Don Raymundo Olivas and his wife, Dona Teodora took the acreage closest to the ocean and completed the main house in 1851.

They were able to build a commercially successful working ranch which has shaped Ventura County for what it is today.

On a sad note, Dona Teodora was brutally murdered by a band a marauding thieves. Her spirit is said to wander about the balcony, living room and kitchen. Especially the kitchen! We took the ghost tour and when we walked from the kitchen through a small pantry to the outside it was almost like an icy hand was holding you back from exiting. Very scary! For one brief moment I thought I wasn't going to be able to get out of that room.

So if you like history or if you just like a great haunted house don't miss the Olivas Park Adobe.

Albinger Archaelogical Museum

by spgood301

This is a small but interesting museum, right on Ventura's Main Street. See all sorts of historical artifacts from Ventura's past, some well preserved, some not so, & learn a bit about Ventura's history. While there, think about the people who were here before us too.

Admission's free, but a small donation is appreciated.
