Ventura - Small town feel
I love coming back "home" to Ventura County for a quick getaway. Ventura is so less touristy and less expensive that Santa Barbara. There's no pretension in Ventura. It's a laid-back, beachy, diverse community.
I would recommend Ventura/Oxnard/Ojai/Camarillo as a good weekend or vacation getaway. The beaches are clean and safe, the sunsets gorgeous.
Downtown Ventura is a great collection of small restaurants, cafes, bars, thrift shops, antique stores, etc.
Getaway to Ventura--you'll feel relaxed and have a good time.

Surfer's point
Go to C Street over near Seaside park and walk along the boardwalk. Check out the rock sculptures on the beach. There is a man who builds rock sculptures almost daily with was is around. When they fall, they fall. He just builds another the next day. Really cool!
Hot Dog!
It is strange, restaurants come and go in this town but the Top Hat Hot Dog stand has weathered the test of time. You will ususally seen a group of people waiting in line for their hot dogs and hamburgers.
To quote a line from the B-52's "It's a Funky Little Shack, That's Where It's At" I like their hot dogs with mustard, onion, pickles and sauerkraut.
Island Packers
Here is the most popular service to get people out to the Channel Islands and back. It's a fun way to go.
If you're lucky, you'll get to see some marine mammals, such as the dolphins that greeted us on the way out to Santa Cruz Island, and again on the way back. They were fishing. These intelligent mammals corral the fish into a very tight ball (much as a border collie corrals livestock). When the fish are trapped, they have a feast. And they love boats; they swam in front of and alongside us for a while.
So keep your fingers crossed. No telling what may turn up.
