by cmassak

Hi everyone,

my name is Caprice. I am from Austria.
At the end of january 2008 Iam about to move to Whittier, because I will work
for IQAir in Santa Fe Springs.

I dont´t know a lot about Whittier. Is it a nice place to live and do you know,
if I can go climbing somewere near Whittier?

All the best from cold Austria

I live about 20 minutes from Whittier. It's a nice town depending where in Whittier you will be at. It's a very old city so the stores/shopping malls are not updated like in some places around the Los Angeles area. No climbing spots that I know of. The mountains are to the north, what we call the Foothills. We have gone hiking up in Sierra Madre. You can also go to Azusa Canyon. Other good hiking area is Griffith Park. As for climbing, like rock climbing, I really can't say.

Travel Tips for Whittier

Get Good Deals at Lovell's-Uptown

by marinarena

I'll repeat it again. The main reason to go to Whittier is to visit Uptown. You'll find on its 3 or 4 block stretch some of the most quaint shops in the southeast part of Los Angeles county. I especially love to visit Lovells every few months or so. This store specializes in used cds, DVDs and videos but also has new merchandise and has a unique selection of vinyl, t-shirts, pop culture postcards and more. Usually, one can find a great deal with single used cd prices averaging $7.99.

Try What's Healthy at Herbies on Whittier Blvd

by marinarena

Here's a place I'd like to have closer to me. Herbies is a wonderful health store that has a focus on offering organic produce, juices, deli and other foods, as well as selling a variety of health-related items like books.

What's a bit ironic about this place is its location itself. Whittier is not considered the most health-conscious city in SoCal (I mean, so many would come to mind long before Whit---like, Manhattan Beach and many parts of West L.A. for instance. Yet, Whit does has its Herbies and as well as another healthy market ,Trader Joe's, nearby. Perhaps Whit is not a typical American urban sprawl that does not readily embrace healthy lifestyle after all!

Come in Herbies for a refreshing juice ( I go for the banana always--don't read so much into this declaration!)

Herbies is located at Painter Ave and historic Whittier Blvd in the city of Whittier.

Have an Artistic Eye on Whittier

Taking Pictures!

This was taken by an art studio, which is a bit run down and not so well-kept on the outside. Yet, I managed to get this nice shot looking through a fence. Love is a beautiful thing and it stands out amidst drabness.

See beauty in a morose place

by marinarena

- or maybe not so morose depending on how you view mortuaries and death. Rose Hills, claimed to be the largest cementary in the world, is a major city landmark right off the 605 freeway surpassing multiple exits. It is probably the most recognized part of Whittier, sadly or interesting enough. On the huge spread of land are quite gorgeous scenes of natural floral and arbol beauty, as well as a number of monuments. See website for pictures and details.
