Yosemite's Curry Village

Housing here was REALLY cheap... $25/nite... but it was COLD... its pretty much a family size tent that is lifted off the ground about 6" on wood blocks. There were 2 beds in our room, a double size and a twin size. There was also room for a chair and little nightstand with mirror. There is no electrical sockets but there is a halogen light that is just bright enough in the evenings. The door is locked from the outside using a key padlock.

Unique Quality: Very cold in the winter, but very inexpensive. It felt like camping without all the work of putting up a tent. Winter nights can get pretty cold. Brought extra blankets in preparation for the cold.

Curry Village... continued

.... the story continues....

But what I didn't bear in mind that it could be very very cold in the mountains in May. The only thing that was provided in the tent was a very thin blanket...and it was freezing outside! I may be smiling in the picture, but I wasn't smiling for long. It was so bitterly cold, that I couldn't sleep. I didn't dare to go out of my tent to warm up a bit in the car, because there are bears walking around... especially in the car park! This is another thing I didn't realize when I booked the accomodation. There are no mountains or bears in Holland, so how should I now? ;-)

I heard every noise outside and was afraid that a bear would enter the tent. Don't blame me, it was my first camping experience in active bear country... All I could think of, that the bear might see me as a nice midnight snack ;-)

Finally it was morning and I could get out of the tent. I was still freezing cold, and I had to get warm again, quickly! So the first thing I did was take the car for a spin, with the heater in the car put up high. This would probably do the trick. Going for a spin around the park turned out to be a great idea. The morning light was exquisite (see the first picture on this page)

I made reservations for 2 nights, but decided to leave after the first day. The weather was too misserable to enjoy the park and the tent was far too cold. Luckely this wasn't a problem and I even got my money back for the second night.

I think the Canvas Tent Cabin is probably a good place to stay in summer, when it is not that cold. But in May I wouldn't recommend it.

Curry Village

I always try to get accomodation inside a National Park, to make the most out of my visit. The parks get so peaceful when the day tourists have left. This way I can enjoy the sunset / sunrise in the most beautiful surroundings.

So I made reservation for a Canvas Tent Cabin in Curry Village (in the middle of Yosemite NP). I do go camping very often, so a stay in a tent in the middle of the park sounded great. It costed only $42.00 a night (in 1998).

A Canvas Tent Cabin is a wood-framed canvas tent on a raised wooden platform. It has a daily maid service (linen, beds, towels and soap provided every day). Restrooms and shower facilities are centrally located. The tents have electric lights but no heat, plumbing, outlets, phones or TV's.

It sounded good.... I don't need all that, when I am camping. Just me and nature, that is all I need...

Read the rest of the chilling story in the next accomodation tip....

Curry Village is terrific! ...

Curry Village is terrific! Showers, food, cabins and tent-cabins, wooden cabins. Some of the wooden cabins have their own showers and bathrooms, while tent-cabins have two single beds, a lightbulb, bed linens and blankets and a bookshelf. Food lockers are placed throughout the camp, where you should place all food and smelly toiletries. Most excellent.

Curry of Housekeeping camp

by wendyjol

With children in the summer, which do you recommend: Curry village or housekeeping camp?
How far is the walk from housekeeping camp to Curry village?

Thanks
Wendy

Hi Wendy,

I just returned from Yosemite, and it was beautiful!

Choosing between Curry Village and the housekeeping camp depends on how much you want to "rough it" and how much you want to pay. The housekeeping camps are 3 walls and a curtain and 3 foam mattresses, an electrical outlet and cooking table. You bring your own bedding or rent it. The cost may not be any cheaper than the cheapest tent cabin at Curry Village. Curry Village is a step up with a range of cabins from tent cabins with no bath to cabins with bath and fireplaces. No cooking facility in these cabins, but your are right in Curry Village with its cafeteria.

I'd say the walk from the Housekeeping Cabins to Curry Village is about 15 minutes.

Someone unaffiliated with Yosemite has put up a very informative website with lots of pictures of both types of accommodations. Go to
