The Yosemite Bug: Best alternative outside of the park

  • I was very pleased with this place. Yes, it's located outside of the park, but for a private cabin with a shared bathroom (a nice private bathroom, with a great hot shower), it was only $55 including taxes for 2 people. The lodge (pictured here) is a great place to hang out and meet other travelers and while food costs extra, it's really, really good food.

This hostel is set up more like a campground, so it's fairly spread out with cabins and tents laid out over a large area. The staff is very friendly and willing to help out with suggestions about what to do and see. Allow about 35 minutes to drive from the hostel to the Valley floor. Or, you can catch the Yarts (Yosemite Area Regional Transit System) Bus into the park. The bus stop is conveniently located at the end of the driveway on Route 140.

Dorms are also available at $16 per bed. A campsite (for 2-4 people) is $17 (as of June, 2004). Check the website for updated info.

The ‘Bug’ is a great launch pad from which to explore all that Yosemite has to offer. Situated about 25 minutes drive from the main western park entrance, it offers predominantly budget accommodation in tented cabins of various sizes and dormitories. The main buildings have a big in/outdoor cosy bar/restaurant/meeting area-type area where you can grab lunch, drinks or just relax and chat to some fellow travellers. The self-catering facilities are admittedly somewhat Spartan; it does appear that they quite obviously would prefer you to spend your money in their eatery rather than save some! The staff are generally helpful and the rates are some of the best you’re going to get this close to the park. I can best sum this up as somewhere for the backpack-wielding, rather than suitcase-lugging, traveller. My girlfriend and I overhead a few wingers complaining over dinner about the lack-of this/that/the-other – but hey if you want all your comforts you can get them in other places a few miles down the road… If you have money to burn.

The Yosemite Bug: Good hostel near the park
  • Tip Rating:

  • Reception was a bit cold upon a late arrival and at night it was difficult to find your way around the place but other than that I found it a great place to stay.

A lot of travellers from all age groups all looking to enjoy and explore nature. Dorm rooms were reasonable sized although not much place to put luggage. But there was a bathroom attached which was clean and spacious. People staying in the dorms were entitled to use the kitchen which was well equipped.

A step up from dorm beds was a permanent tent that sleeps four for a bit extra. And then there were private cabins with bathrooms as well.

In the communal kitchen there is internet access although it was very expensive and tended not to work all the time.
The hostel is a way out from the park entrance but buses would pick you up in front and by car it took about 20 mins.

It also had food and bar services, with a nice cosy fireplace, lounges and boardgames.

The Yosemite Bug: a perfect retreat!
  • Satisfaction:
  • a large, inviting dining room and a hostel that's comfortable and welcoming, resembling a large camping ground rather than a hotel. The rooms are tidy and clean and a great value, and there are many delightful trails and quiet areas around the complex. you'll encounter more than your fair share of international travellers and hippies here, it's highly recommended!

the cafe really does have excellent food like they say... it's organic and vegetarian food that isn't boring, and i'm surprised they can serve such tasty and quality food for such low prices!

  • Great place to stay, inexpensive, clean, warm and not too far from the park. You can take the YARTS bus from right in the front of the property if you dont want to drive to the park. We stayed 4 nights (4 people in a "family cabin" and only spent $180. There's a community kitchen there for guests use and we cooked all our own meals and saved a bundle. I recommend this place when visting Yosemite on a budget.

The Yosemite Bug: A very varied alternative
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Yosemite Bug has a place for just about anyone... from tent spaces and dorm beds to cabins w/private baths. I chose a single w/shared bath (underneath the main lodge) for $55 tax incl. I made a reservation over the internet... or, at least, I thought I did. Which brings me to my number one tip/warning/piece of info. If you make reservations to stay here (and you'll need 'em in summer), do it BY PHONE! Do not make reservations over the internet... their internet reservation service is NOT reliable! Fortunately, the room I thought I had reserved was still available - some folks the week before had not been so lucky. Judging from converations I had (and overheard), this happens frequently. Or, at least, enough to where it's a problem they should really be correcting.

Pros - The food really is as good as everyone says. The top sirloin is excellent as is just about everything else on the menu (except the buckwheat pancakes - yuck!). The cheesecake is heavenly! Even if you're not staying here, I'd come just for the food and the atmosphere. They will also make you a bag lunch for your excursions out - sandwich, trail mix & apple or $6 - still a little cheaper (and a LOT tastier) than you'll get in the Park. The main lodge is comfy and a fun place to hang out and read or play games or whatever. The room was very comfy and clean (with 6 Monet's and a Van Gogh!), and there were ample bathrooms and showers.

Cons - See above. You may have to put up with rowdy teens on occasion, just grin and bear it. The rooms under the lodge get some foot noise, but the air conditioner noise is more bothersome. Though there is bus service to YNP, the hostel is a good quarter mile from the road. Uphill. The buckwheat pancakes were the only real dud on the menu. But really, aside from the reservation snafu, I enjoyed the bug very much and will probably go back!

    The Yosemite Bug: Inexpensive alternative
  • Satisfaction:
  • While it's expensive to stay in Yosemite, especially in the valley, Yosemite Bug Hostel provides an inexpensive alternative. It's located between El Portal and Mariposa outside the park's west entrance. Besides the traditional dorm rooms, it also has private rooms, tent cabins, and campground.

What I liked about the hostel:
    1. inexpensive ($16 for a dorm bed in 2002)
    2. relatively clean
    3. nice restaurant
    4. internet (for a small fee)

What I disliked about the hostel
    1. still 30 miles from the valley
    2. parking lot can be crowded
    3. although it's right by highway 140, it's a little hard to find

I didn't take a photo of the Hostel. The attached photo was taken from its official website. It shows the hostel's main dining hall.
