a bit more serene than the valley

We arrived at Yosemite with no reservation in late June and found all the Valley campgrounds full to no surprise. We were told that White Wolf Campground had just opened that morning and there were still spots available so we immediately drove up there and found an open spot. Actually, there were many as it was during the week and fairly early in the day. Since we had a lot of time to explore the park, we figured this made a good base for us to check out both Tioga Road but also gave us decent access to the Valley for amenities and getting permits.

Unique Quality: White Wolf is a very nice wooded campground with 71 sites and they charge a very reasonable $14 per night. It is at an elevation of 8000 feet so considerably cooler than the Valley spots at 4000 feet, hence the later opening. It generally opens in July and closes in early September. We just got lucky with the late June opening. There are flush toilets and potable water but no showers. The closest showers are at Curry Village in Yosemite Valley, about 45 minutes away down a winding 30 miles of the Tioga Road.

We enjoyed the campground. The spots are well-spaced and it seems to attract a more hardy type of camper than those camping in the Valley. It is probably a bit more quiet as well. It is a good location if you are looking to explore Tioga Road and Yosemite Valley as they are both within easy striking distance. There are numerous hiking trails along Tioga Road. These trails are less crowded than those in the Valley and you are starting at a higher elevation so you generally are not climbing as much to get your views. We saw marmots right in the campground, one other advantage of camping at such a high elevation and if you like camping in cool weather, much more comfortable than down below too. When we did get to camp in the Valley, we found it a bit warm.
