Yountville, CA
The Lavender Inn
Nothing in Yountville is very far away from anything else. A small town in the center of the Napa wine corridor sitting between the main road and the Silverado trail which parallels the highway all the way to Calistoga then drops off into a mountain fire road and disappears. The Lavender consists of 6-10 individual duplex spaces, each fenced with private porches. Ours contained a small fountain to fill in the aural component in enhancing the atmosphere of privacy and intimacy.
The main building is a ranch house set on a tree shaded corner and surrounded by dozens of mature Lavender bushes in various stages of bloom. The garden is tended by a man who may have been a resident of long-standing in the area, or is perhaps an aging refuge from San Francisco in the early 70’s … He is older now and helping his second daughter through college and tending the gardens of others. He has done a good job – the Lavender is vital, the roses are plentiful and fragrant and the entire place feels pleasantly planted.
Our room had a large bathroom with two gracious sinks and a whirlpool bath tub built for two. The floors are cool unfinished cement with chips of tile thrown in here and there. The bedroom was light and soft to the eye with a fireplace ready to go should the California night turn cool.
Unique Quality: Breakfast is made hot and fresh each morning by a chef who arrives at about 6:00AM … She makes a wicked quiche and a delicious spiced brown bread.
