Independence Ghost Town
by Callavetta
A short trail strolls through the remains of Old Independence, now a ghost town. Beaver ponds, dams and lodges can be found along the river that runs through what used to be an old gold mining town.
Situated at 10,800 feet, walk slowly because you may have a tough time catching your breath!
PachyPam's Aspen experience
by PachyPam
Well wot an amazing time I had. A was invited over to attend a friends wedding and I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Aspen itself is set 7500" above sea level in the Rocky mountains and has a history linked to the Native American Indian tribe, the Ute. It is famous for its fabulous sking & snowboarding slopes, although canoeing, fishing, cycling, golf and many more outdoor activities are wildly available. The scenery all around the area is beautiful and I likened it to 'A piece of God's garden'. I thought with it being April & there still being a lot of snow around that it would be cold so packed lots of winter woolies. I was shocked when we were able to stand 11,500" above sea level on top of a mountain wearing shorts & tee-shirt & get a sun tan.
Fly fishing in the Frying Pan river was one of the activities I tried & to my amazement & delight I caught 4 brown trout. Dare I say "I'm hooked".
There are plenty of places to eat, drink & be merry with so many friendly multi-national people who all just seem to enjoy life to the full.
A must do is a trip on one of the many Gondolas to the top of the mountains, even if it is to just take in the spectacular views.
