Visiting Boulder

by scoffy991177

Hey, I'm visiting the University of Colorado in Boulder in the next couple months to see if it's where I want to transfer. I'm only visiting for a couple days so besides looking at the school, what are some other things I shouldn't miss? or specific things I should do??

Hi there!

I have been to Boulder a few times, I was just an hour away in Fort Collins, at Colorado State for college. Boulder is a really cool place, especially for those that enjoy the outdoors. I definitely suggest (weather permitting) you go and hike up to the top of the "flat irons". If you don't know already the flat iron are the large rocks above the town, so climbing to the top will give you an incredible view. Also, drive up to Estes Park, you can see the hotel where the "Shinning" was filmed, as well as, run into large herds of Elk.

If you have any questions feel free to drop me line.

Safe travels, Tim

In addition to hiking near the Flatirons, take a stroll along the Pearl Street Mall. It'll give you an interesting sampling of some of the flavor of the town. Consider stopping in at NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) for their free science exhibits. Take the Celestial Seasonings Tea factory tour. Visit the Leanin' Tree museum of western art. Visit "The Hill" area just west of campus.

Several of these things are described in more detail on this site under the heading "Boulder Area":

Hi,

Of course if you're visiting in the winter, you could check out Eldora, the sort-of local ski area. It's not as big as Winter Park or Breckenridge, but it's only 45 minutes above Boulder. They also have a nice (albeit hilly) cross-country ski center.

As far as Boulder, the other replies sum it up pretty well. I would look at www.coloradodaily.com to see what events are happening when you are coming. That should give you a good idea of what's going on here. Boulder has a very good music scene, and CU always has a lot going on.

Good luck, Mike

Travel Tips for Boulder

visit the pedestrian mall in...

by tff986s

visit the pedestrian mall in downtown boulder on a weedend nite; much amateur entertainment, nite life, etc.
also if time permits a trip to estes park [app 1+ hours into the mountains] makes a great day trip
shopping at the new flatiron mall in rock creek just outside of boulder is fascinating also mountains, bicycling, hiking, road trips, wonderful weather, stunning scenery

Mind the leash

by eurotraveler5

There are almost as many dogs in Boulder as people. Be mindful that not all trails allow dogs, and even those that do may require a leash. Some trails allow off-leash dogs but they must have a voice-and-sight tag to be off-leash. Within the city limits, all dogs are required to be on a leash and dogs, even on a leash, are not allowed on the Pearl Street pedestrian mall (although I've seen a few toy-sized ones being carried around).

Sunglasses a must

by CO-Chad

Colorado brags of 300 sunny days per year. In addition, the high altitude and low humidity means relatively little protection from ultraviolet rays. Bring sunglasses that protect against UV, and don't forget the sunscreen. Sunscreen, mosquito repellent The mountains are stunning, but fancy equipment is tough to carry while climbing the flatirons or hiking mountain parks. A small digital camera might be best. A sweater or light jacket is useful even in summer, given the change in temperature from morning to evening. If you want to blend in with the locals, opt for a fleece vest. Most anything you've forgotten can be picked up at McGuckin Hardware, a favorite because it's locally-owned and community oriented. McGuckin's is not a bad place for people-watching, at that.

Visit Twisted Pine Brewing Company!

by brewguyboulder

This brewery is a little off the beaten path despite being very close to many of the cities hotels. They've got the best beer in town here and a very knowledgeable and friendly staff. This is a great place to enjoy a sample tray or pint of fresh, local Colorado Craft Beer. Make sure to try the Hoppy Boy IPA, Espresso Stout and Billy's Chili's Pepper Beer. This place is also dog friendly!

Indian Peaks Wilderness

by sswagner

Directly west of Boulder is this amazing wilderness area. Its beauty is on par with Rocky Mountain National Park itself, yet it is not as well known. There are numerous hiking trails as well as places to camp in the backcountry. Are you are an avid outdoor lover and wish to really see the wilderness that surrounds the Continental Divide, this is it. Backcountry permits are required from the forest service.
