Flatirons

by andylandrews

I have heard that the Flatirons are a really nice area to hike in and I will be traveling to Boulder in a few days for the first time. I am only going to be in the area for a few days, so I want to pick the best place/s to hike--would the Flatirons be a good choice or is there a better area to spend my short time?

There are so many great places to hike in Boulder! I guess it depends on what kind of hike you're looking for; strenuous climbing or flat meandering. The weather will come into play as well, although at the moment the forecast for the rest of the week is mostly clear and warm (in the 70s here today!) If you have a car, then you'll have an incredible choice of trails within a 30-minute drive. If you're "stuck" in the city, you still have a lot of choose from, any of which will be outstanding!

The Flatirons trails are accessible via Chautauqua Park off Baseline Rd. Here's a great website which describes Open Space and Mountain Park in the city of Boulder: http://www.ci.boulder.co.us/openspace/nature/scenery.htm Follow the links within this site to get trail maps and descriptions. Be sure to bring a camera because you will be blown away by the vistas! Have a great trip!

the Flatirons is what Boulder is all about. No visit to the area is comlete without a hike around them.

There are two main trailheads when approaching the flatirons: Chautauqua Park and NCAR. I would first go to Chautauqua Park via Baseline Rd (which is a great drive for fantastic views of Boulder on it's own right). The park allows for classic pictures of the mountains. This is also where a lot of the trails start. I recommend Gragory Canyon if you want to get to the top!

NCAR is the second must. NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) is a beautiful building tucked away next to the mountains. Drive up there via Table Mesa Dr. There are great views just from the parking lot - as well as many trails you can pursue. I recommend Mallory Cave trail for a short hike.

PS - the flatirons are best viewed in the morning/early afternoon, otherwise the sun will be beaming in your eyes everytime you look up.

Enjoy!

- Grant

Travel Tips for Boulder

Hike, bike, rock climb, shop, cafe hop, take Pearl St. by storm, attend festivals, and many other things. I love the atmosphere of Boulder, it's perfect little bubble to escape too. Relax there for a few days and whether you're activity oriented or not, there's always a variety of activities to take part in.

Leave the Pro-Bush bumper stickers at home

Boulder is a very liberal and Democratic town. Anti-war protests are common on the corner of Canyon and Broadway. If you don't want to get into a confrontation, keep any conservative views to yourself.

Boulder has hundreds of hiking trails of all levels. Most are well marked. People are always hiking with their dogs, and are very friendly. The views are just spectacular. It's a great way to get a work out. Hiking boots

Pamper yourself at this amazing getaway

by travelingbunny

On our last trip to Boulder in February we were so stressed from work, school, and the frigid Boston weather we decided to spend a day pampering ourselves at a resort spa about an hour from Boulder, up in the mountains. It was a great decision! The Gold Lake Resort is no ordinary spa - while they do offer a dazzling array of pampering delights, the glorious lakeside setting in the midst of the Rockies was as soothing and pleasurable as the fantastic massages we received. We spent the morning horseback riding and then retreated to the lodge for a fabulous gourmet lunch beside a roaring fire. The resort boasts natural hot springs along the lake in which you can luxuriate while admiring the beautiful views. A truly memorable and fantastic day, and I bet it’s even better in the summer.

Most people who come to Boulder never leave the Pearl st area. Take a drive up into the hills and get lost. Better yet, rent some mountain bikes and park the car and just ride-anywhere. Boulder is VERY bike friendly with many paths and trails and good bike maps. Drive south on 93 out of town and check out Eldorado Canyon State Park-small, but world renowned for climbling-hit the pool while you're there! Go to NCAR (south off Broadway) You can't miss it. It's the huge buildings on the hill just southwest of town. It was designed by the architect I.M. Pei in the early 60's I believe (don't quote me on the date!) Take a drive/hike up Flagstaff road. Eat at the Flagstaff House Restauraunt the only 4 (5?) star restauraunt in the region. I don't think it's all that great but the view of Boulder and the plains at night is well worth the amount they over charge for the meals.
