Gold Camp Road
by Astrobuck
This used to be the path the railroad took to Cripple Creek during the 1800's. After the railroad diminished, the tracks were taken up, but the path still remained. It was then opened to highway traffic until the 1980's when one of the old railroad tunnels caved in. Today, it is used by hikers, bikers, and runners. Part of the road is still open, but you have to drive out of the way to get to it. This is the collapsed tunnel.

gold panning / detecting
by pch41689
I will be visiting Colo. in late spring; have never been there. Where are some good places to try my hand at gold prospecting? I will just have a pan and maybe a very small sluice. I would like to try some metal detecting for nuggets, also. Any suggestions? I will spend about a week there.

I am an avid gold panner, so i know a few places around here. For one, the area between Cripple Creek and Breckenridge is supposed to be abundant. Living here in Colorado Springs, I was surprised to find gold in the Helen Hunt Falls / Gold Camp Road areas. There is a creek near a campground in Leadville that runs alongside a railroad track. This creek is VERY abundant. Hope this information is helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.
