We are getting up very early to drive from Durango to Canon City in June. We have a choice of driving 4.75 hours going east on 160 through Pagosa Springs and Wolf Creek Pass,then north on 285 and east on 50. The other choice which takes 6 hours would be to go north on 550 along the San Juan Skyway to Montrose, and then going east on 50. I have heard that San Juan Skyway is a pretty drive, but we are limited on our time. We want to spend the afternoon at Royal Gorge, the evening at Seven Falls and the next two days at Colorado Springs. Is it worth taking the extra 1.25 hours to go on the Million Dollar Highway? I imagine the other way has some pretty scenery too. ?
If spending the day at the Royal Gorge is your intent, I woudl opt for the quickest route. the only advantage of going through Silverton and Ouray and on to Montrose, would be the opportunity to stop and see the spectacular Black Canyon of the Gunnison. This is a National Monument located just outside of Montrose.
Take the 550 to 50 route. It's a bit longer, but it's gorgeous. Royal Gorge won't take much of your time.
Gunnison is also a really pretty town, as is Silverton. Worth the detour, IMHO.
Walk across the bridge and take a look down. Visit the viewpoints on the other side of the canyon. When the power came back to the tram leading down to the canyon ground is my fondest memory of Royal Gorge.
Because for half an hour we were hanging somewhere in the middle between the sky and deep ground of the gorge because of a power loss of the tram. I felt relieved when the electricity went on again and we continued our ride.
Another attraction of Southern Colorado is the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The depth and width of that canyon is impressive. A scenic route stretches along the rim with several view points. The park is located maybe two hours west of Great Sand Dunes National Park.
This train starts daily from Cañon City through Royal Gorge and is said to be one of the most spectacular railroads of the world.
The train is very slow along Arkansas River, 10 miles in 30 min.

If you turn down the street for the Railway in town, there is a nice park. Walk across the bridge. There is a playground, walk along the Arkansas River or feed the ducks and geese at the pond. Fun place to take the kids.
The most fun place here for the kids! An old west town, they have magic shows,re-enacted gun fights on the street,lots of old buildings to explore,the mystery house building,a horse carriage ride, and a train ride where you can get a pretty good view of the gorge.
Not as cool as Old Tucson in Arizona, but if you haven't been there already and you have kids along this is defenitely worth stopping at here in Canon city,CO
