Packing List

Take whatever bags you want! Bring comfortable walking shoes. COS has the ability to be 70 degrees F. one minute, and 30 degrees F. and snowing ten minutes later. (It happened just last year) So beware of that and be prepared with a jacket and long pants should the day cool off. Typically, when the sun dives behind Pikes Peak, it gets colder.
It's hard to say what the temperature will be when. Colorado is weird like that. Last year it was 70 degrees F. in February! and much colder in May. Summers are pretty warm to hot (80s, 90s) but don't get caught on the mountain without enough clothing! Well, if you plan on hiking, biking or rafting, a first-aid kit is recommended. Other than that, whatever you'd normally bring. Be sure to drink a lot of water, as it is dry here and at 6000 feet. Bring cameras and mucho film. You should check on regulations on camping in COS's parks. I'll try to post that here as soon as I can get the info. Bring trailmix, gorp, or whatever you call it. It helps on the trails and goes well with water.
YMCA building
by OlenaKyiv
This building represents the efforts of the Young Women’s Christian Association, which was initiated locally in 1899. A fundraising campaign began in 1909 and by 1912, this building emerged to provide classrooms, a gymnasium, and dining area, private rooms and space for religious, social and cultural activities. Used as a hospital by the Red Cross during the influenza epidemic of 1918-19, the building also served as the USO center during World War II.
Architect was Nicholas van den Arend. Continuing in its cultural mission until 1971, the building was threatened with demolition until the William A. Simpsons, a local family involved in banking, purchased and rehabilitated it for commercial use.
Architect Nicholas van den Arend.
Address: 130 East Kiowa Street.

Blondie's on Tejon
by leafmcgowan about Blondie's Sports Bar and Grill
is meant to be a sports bar with blonde waitresses, plasma TVs, pool tables and live music three or four nights a week. It includes 2,900 square feet -- the old Gray Rose women's apparel store before it became a motorcycle shop -- and will have a large deck out the back door that it will share with the Wildcats club inside Rum Bay. The second level is the Red Martini which is a combination martini, wine and cigar bar with an outdoor deck overlooking Tejon Street. First visit, I like the ambience, though the patrons are your typical clubsters, fakesters, and party crowd that you find at every other mainstream club. But the music was good (80's on this friday night) and a small dance floor, with paid beautiful dancers in black bikinis stage dancing, and the drinks were good - waittresses were blonde, and friendly. I'll return. Rating: 3.75 stars out of 5. (For the Springs in of itself, really a 4.50 based on first impressions, since there is not much to speak of in the Springs with an alternative zing ... )
Large scale Italian restaurant
by basstbn about Zio's Italian Kitchen
Generally speaking, I prefer to try locally-owned restaurants when travelling. On one evening, however, we decided to go to Zio's, a chain restaurant with a large following.
You can rely on Zio's for good food and attentive service, a little over-priced but ok. This was especially important to us that day after a very poor experience at lunch (a bbq place in Old Colorado City.) Veal parmesano has always been one of my favorite Italian entrés. At Zio's it is a little thicker and meatier than a lot of places, and is quite tasty. Excellent pastas.
