Denver Highlights

by skarics

Hi, myself and 2 freinds will be in Denver at the end of the month and I'm wondering if someone could suggest some of the "Must see's" in & around Denver. We only have a weekend (which Im sure is not nearly enough) I have been told that driving to Boulder is a must as well as Estes Park. Eldora (chairlift) was also recommended and Red Rocks. Since we can't possibly fit all of that in, hopefully someone can help us with some suggestions. Thank you in advance!

If you like nature, then check out Rocky Mountain National Park, which is nortwest of Denver. Also, spend some time in Boulder.

Red Rocks is a concert venue. Try to find out if something you'd like is playing when you're there. Otherwise, you can get up there as long as there are no shows.
Eldora is kind of nothing. It's just a little village. Nederland is nicer. Estes Park and Lyons are also really nice.
Boulder is a must if you can get up there. Otherwise, in Denver it depends on what you like to do. There are a few breweries in LoDo, the rest of the Downtown area is kind of nice, there are a few good museums and there is some great hiking just outside of town.

Travel Tips for Denver

We have alot of great areas: the mountains to the west are awesome. Many great restaurants and a great downtown area with restaurants like Morton's, PF Changs, etc. One of the best circuits of metropolitan biking/hiking trails in the country. Not uncommon for a snowstorm to be taking place in the mountains 30-60 minutes away while we bask in mid 50's to 70 degrees in the city. Mountains, the great outdoors and friendly folks.

Architecture-Buerger Brothers Building

by Toughluck

Elaborate Art Deco elements grace the facade of this 1929 building designed by architect Montana Fallis as the home to the Buerger Brothers Beauty Supply Company. The building was renovated and converted into residential units in the late 1990s.

The Colorado Capitol Building

by OlenaKyiv

Colorado's Capitol Building was designed with all the modern conveniences: electricity, hot and cold running water, and steam heat. It had its own artesian wells and an elevator. Tunnels beneath the building allowed water and coal to be moved from place to place without bothering people with dirt or workers.

It was insisted that all building material must be from Colorado. South Beaver Creek Granite was used throughout the building. Lyons Sandstone was used in the foundation and walls. Colorado Onyx, extremely rare and found only in the Colorado Capitol. When the supply of Colorado Onyx was gone, the basement was finished in white marble.

Finally, the dome rising 272 feet in the air, was covered with 200 ounces of 24 karate Colorado gold.

depends on how long you stay. comfy shoes. bring an umbrella and lite jacket even in summer. lots of photo ops camping is all around It is cool in the mornings here and then gets overwhelmingly hot in the afternoons. Of course during the spring and summer months only. Bundle up if it is winter.

Hiking and Dining

Get out of the city for a little bit and enjoy nature! In 20 minutes you can be in Idaho Springs with many shops and good eats (Take I-70 west until you get to the third exit of Idaho Springs). Beau Jo's pizza is a must if you've never had Colorado pizza. There are also other good places like Mainstreet for breakfast, a buffalo place for lunch, and then pizza for dinner. For drinks, you can go to the local micro brewery, Tommy Knockers. The new hot store in town is Woodland Park Gifts and Gallery.

A great hike is only a short drive up Mt Evans. About 13 miles up St Rt 103 is Echo Lake. For you flat landers you might just want to walk around the lake and call it a day. But, if your tough (which is an easy hike for someone who lives at altitude) there is a trail that starts on the backside of the lake and goes back to Idaho Springs Reservoir (2.5 miles). If you are really tough you can continue back to Twin Chicago Lakes (another 2.5 miles). Start early; clouds tend to roll in during the afternoon. Also, drink plenty of water. Altitude sickness is no joke!
