When to visit!!
by 8BALLUK
Hello everybody
Although I've been to Colorado several times its never been later in the year apart from Christmas one year. I'm looking at planning a trip next year and wanted to visit either September time of October. I plan to drive round Estes Park and Cripple Creek/Cannon City aswel as staying in Denver and Colorado Springs.
Could you please give me your opions on what it will be like in September/October and which month you think is best.
Thanks in advance for your answers.
Regards
Gary

If the snow falls it is still gorgeous but cold! I love the fall, but today (5th Sept) they announced the closing of Trail Ridge road - near Estes Park - which I would really recommend! Temps dropped 2 days ago but due to be back mid 70s tomorrow. So it really is a crap shoot! (Even if you don't do the Ridge road, you can go up on the passes.)
So no matter when you come, bring warm clothes and jacket and warm boots or such - you will want to walk in the snow - and there is always some available in the mountains.

Thanks very much for your reply. Trail Ridge road near Estes Park is definitely somewhere I wan't to take my wife so do you think August or September will be a better month to vist. I wan't to try and avoid any big crowds if possible.
Thanks
Gary

My husband corrected me - Trail Ridge is NOT closed - it is Mt. Evans that closed. Trail Ridge is something that will be checked on a day to day basis. It is open all year but can be closed if we get a large snowfall - which can happen.
I don't know if you have looked it up but here is the link:

They have shuttle buses that ran until first week of September this year, so that may be a consideration - if you are not used to mtn. driving, you might want the shuttle.
A lot of the local schools begin early August so the crowds do thin. Your best bet would be just not on a weekend - for any of the towns like Estes.
Hope this is helpful!

Go in September. The weather is still good and you can drive up into the mountains. Definitely visit Rocky Mountain National Park. If you are in the Denver area, also visit Boulder, which is a fun college town. Cedntral City and Georgetown are interesting old historic towns if you like that sort of thing.

Thanks again for your replies. I appreciate the info. I think we will visit late September.
We are also considering staying on a ranch for a few days. I know there are DUDE ranches but not sure if these are just very tousity. We are trying to locate a working ranch where we could experience helping out and maybe horse riding etc. Any suggestions???
Thanks again.
PS: Estes Park is my favourite place but I also like Boulder and Colorado Springs.

The last week of Sept is usually the prime week for autumn aspen viewing. The only pass you might worry about in those areas is Trail Ridge Rd but it's not a necessity to go over that. Old Stage Road out of Cripple Creek has some pretty aspens, but RMNP doesn't have much aspen (as I'm sure you know) so there won't be much color there.
Travel Tips for Denver
not just ski resorts and dude ranches

Many people just see Denver on the drive between the airport and the ski resorts. But the city is worth a trip all by itself. It has the size, bars, restaurants, shopping, museums, sports...etc. of any big city but still holds onto the good natured, layed back, wild west attitude of a small town. My entire childhood is full of memories of great times in Denver...baseball, football and hockey games, skiing, hiking, hanging out with freinds, cruising downtown, great mexican food- I love it!
Linger at each exhibit. Crawl...

Linger at each exhibit. Crawl under the ray exhibit to pop up under the pleiglass bubble for an intimite view of the rays! Kids love it but adults can do it too! Large fish in huge tanks. Pictured is an arowana which floats just under the surface water, spits upwards to dislodge insects for a tasty meal.
The Auraria Campus - Tivoli
by OlenaKyiv
The Tivoli Student Union, or commonly named just Tivoli is a well-known among students and well-visited, because it is the place of capmus book store, numorous student organizations' centers, student services, rest and study lounges, cafes, and a food court. Actually not so many visitors who are unfamiliar with Denver history have even a guess that this center of students' active life was a former brewery !
Originally named the Colorado Brewery in 1866, Tivoli was founded by German immigrant Moritz Sigi. Subsequent owner Max Melsheimer added the prominent seven story mansard tower and the Turnhalle opera house. In 1901 brewer John Good took over operations, renaming the building Tivoli after the famous gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The Tivoli was one of the most successful breweries in the Rockies, and one of the few to survive prohibition. A major flood and labor strikes forced its closure in 1969. When the Auraria Campus was built, a private developer leased the building and restored it as a specialty shopping center. In 1991, students voted to buy back the lease and renovate the building as a combination retail center and student union.
Directions
by tejanasueca
In Denver, when you give, or get, directions people will always use the references "it's east off," "south off," etc. This is because everything is Denver is relative to the mountains, which are in the west. Hence, people expect you to always know where west is, and hence where north, east, and south is.
So, just keep track of the mountains (it's not hard...unless it's REALLY dark) and you will know what people are talking about.
Incredible College Football Setting
by bg408
If you are lucky enough to see a Colorado Football game in Boulder - do it. The backdrop with the Flatirons and the campus is amazing. Folsom Field is a really intimate stadium and tickets are not hard to find. Try the Harvest House before and after the game. Go Buffs! It is usually really nice in the fall in Boulder, but the weather can change quickly. Dress in layers.
