Free day in and around Denver, what to do?

by dmj2001

We'll be in the Denver area for a little more than a day in mid-August. What's fun/interesting/unique to do in the city? We're spending a couple days in the Vail Valley before we get to Denver, so we're looking for more city-ish things to do, but if there's nothing in the city, then what's the best use of our time?

Well not in the city but I was fascinated by the fact that here the great plains meet the Rockies and that Buffalo Bill - William F. Cody - was buried.

Check the web site for the US mint and see if you can book a tour. Visit the Capital and there is a great art museum.

If you're looking to do city stuff, then head Downtown. What day of the week are you going to be there?
You can park in LoDo (located on the northwest side of Denver's Downtown, near the intersection of Wynkoop and 16th), walk around, then maybe walk down the 16th Street Mall. If you get tired at the end, there's a free shuttle bus that will take you back to LoDo. Lots of shops and restaurants.
If you're into beer, then there's also a lot for you there. The Great Divide tap house opens later in the day (check the hours online) and offers tours most days, the Wynkoop Brewery is open for lunch and dinner and has tours on Saturdays, and the Breckenridge Brewpub north of Coors Field is also open for lunch and dinner.
South Gaylord is another good shopping area. It's along South Gaylord (1 block west of University) around Mississippi Street. From there, you can also walk west to Washington Park, which is easily one of the prettiest and popular parks in the city.
Then there's a ton of shopping around Cherry Creek, particularly a block or so north of the mall. Lots of local art. Cherry Creek Mall is upscale and nice, but it's just a mall.
Then there's the Botanical Gardens. It's a really nice one, but probably not good to do right now because they have massive construction going on and you'd be walking around the gardens with the sound of jackhammers and diesel engines around you.
Lots of museums in Denver as well and, of course, the US Mint. However, for the mint, you need to book it (you can do that online) now because it fills up quite a while beforehand. You also should read the rules about what you can take in, because it's very restrictive.
If you can't find enough to do in Denver, then you could always go to Boulder.

Travel Tips for Denver

The Urban Zone in Denver

by usofeh

There is a side to Denver that is growing up as a decent urban enclave. It's centered in an area just north of Downtown called LODO. For dining, bars, live music and a growing base of boutique hotels, it's about the only place in Denver where it has the spirit of a Chicago-type ambiance.

When visiting Denver you absolutely must visit Coors Field and catch a Rookies game. Check out the web site www.coloradorockies.com if your not a sports fan then check out the Denver Museum of Natural History. Fondest Memory of Denver would have to be my first visit to Denver in 1986 I instantly fell in love with the city and moved here a year later with my Family. We visited the Zoo, Museum, Capital, Elitches and Casa Bonita (Mexican dinning and entertainment).

Colorado History Museum

This museum has fascinating collections, detailed dioramas, historic photographs and artifacts. It is located at 1300 Broadway in Denver. Phone: 303-866-3682.

The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm and on Sunday from noon to 4:30 pm.

The museum offers many special programs for kids and adults. This Indian woman was holding a workshop with kids.

City and County Building

by OlenaKyiv

Eleven varieties of marble are featured inside this impressive home to mayor, city council and other municipal offices.

Despite charges of bad taste, the City and County building has been decorated riotously with colored lights every holiday season since 1832.

Packing List

by Shananagan

Everyone describes their city with 'If you don't like the weather, just wait an hour and it'll change.' In Denver, we MEAN it. Last week (it was the end of February), it went from 70 to -10 in 24 hours. Pack layers and heavy shoes and expect snow any time of year exept July and August. The other 10 months are fair game.
