Suggestions on things to see and do in and around Denver???

by cckbp7

My wife and I have decided to take a road trip to Denver and the surrounding area around New Years. We'll have 4 or 5 days to split between Denver and 1 or 2 other cities. Probably won't do any skiing this trip just enjoying the area. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do in Denver and what other cities would be worth checking out? I appreciate any insight.

New Years is not a particularly good time to come because the ski crowds are there but, if you're not skiing, it's a pain to deal with the snow and your outdoor opportunities are a bit hindered.
In the city itself, the US mint is always a big attraction. The Downtown area, particularly LoDo (Lower Downtown) offers loads of fun. There are several great brewpubs near to Downtown as well: Wynkoop, Breckenridge and Great Divide.
Excellent museums and a good botanical gardens, although the latter may be disappointing in the winter.
There are a lot of cool little neighborhoods around town, as well. Check out Lower Gaylord, which is near Washington Park around University at Mississippi. Capitol Hill is also really nice. Then there's the Cherry Creek path, with its upscale, mostly indoor shopping.
For other cities, Boulder is the obvious choice. It's really very pretty there. Wonderful Downtown area with great restaurants and, again, some very good brewpubs: Walnut, Mountain Sun and Boulder Beer.
Then you've also got Colorado Springs, about an hour to the south. Tons of stuff to see there: Garden of the Gods, Pike's Peak, Manitou Springs, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and the beautiful and historic Colorado City.
To the north is Fort Collins. I think it doesn't get the respect it deserves. More great breweries and a very pretty "Old Town" area. Not many tourists, so it's pretty unspoiled.
You could also head out to the ski towns, but they'll be crowded at that time of the year.

Travel Tips for Denver

Colorado Convention Center

by RJ1967

Colorado Convention Center is the largest convention center in the state of Colorado. Its being expanded as we speak, but here are some square footage/sq metre figures to get an idea of its size.

Exhibit area: 287,952sq ft/ 26751sq m
Ballroom: 34,777sq ft/ 3231sq m
The middle floor is mostly offices and I was unable to get a figure for the whole floor.

Downtown Union station was...

by sinistral

Downtown Union station was breathtaking. It was the first thing we saw coming into Denver (we came by Amtrak). It is a beautiful old building that soon might not be around any more, what with the transportation district fighting over it and threatening to condemn it cause they want the yard. It is definitely a must-see esp., if you are a train buff. The most beautiful thing about Denver is sunrise. Get up early in the morning, and just watch the mountains as the sun hits them and starts showing on more and more. The tips turn pink, then more becomes pink as the tips turn yellow, then their true color. Then the rest of the range follows suit. Nothing makes me feel better quicker.

The Auraria Campus - Emmanuel Gallery

by OlenaKyiv

Emmanuel is Denver’s oldest church building, originally constructed in 1876 to serve an Episcopalian congregation. The stone chapel is a mixture of Romanesque and Gothic archi- tectural styles. Emmanuel was converted into a Jewish synagogue in 1903 and served as an artist’s studio from 1958 until 1973. The building was approved for listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969 and currently serves Auraria as a shared art gallery for the three schools on campus.

Weekend in the Mountains

by Toughluck

We discovered to our sorrow that everyone in Denver takes the weekend to go to Estes Park. Well, not everyone. Some go to Rocky Mountain National Park instead.

On weekends, there are a lot of people in both of these places. It's one of the reasons that the town and the park have shuttle buses running back and forth all summer. They're both beautiful places. If you enjoy people, music, dancing, and a lively atmosphere, go anytime in the summer and especially on weekends. If you prefer a lower key visit, pick spring or fall.

Hike or Bike at Green Mountain

by tejanasueca

Nice area to go mountain biking, hiking, or trail running just 20min away from downtown Denver. The area has several trails for different levels and purposes. The peak of Green Mountain is at 6588ft. Hike up there and get a good view of Denver, especially later during the day. If you plan on mountain biking, don't forget to bring a spare tube. It is not fun to have to walk in your biking shoes for several miles (I would know!!!)
