Late Fall in Durango

by skylynx

Greetings to ya'll from Florida. We are two friskie seniors who can't get out there until early November this year. We love active outdoors, such as ATV, horses, jeep tours in the mountain areas, but not into snow sports or freezing to death. Would like to know what kind of weather to expect and if we need to book a flight between blizzards. Please 'scuze ignorance but I've been in snow only once, but three hurricanes last year! Can we still ride the Silverton train then?

I think that you should be okay. The occasional snowstorm will blow in but when the sun comes out it feels sooo good. You will probably have very cool mornings but in the day highs probably average upper 50's to lower 60's. If you need to get to warmer weather you can take a drive of a few hours to the Moab, Utah area and it's usually a few degrees warmer there than in Durango.

As for the Silverton Railroad.

It looks like they stop running in late October. :-(

I've been to this area in March and I found the weather very nice to deal with, but if you are coming from Florida it might be bit cold.

Travel Tips for Durango

The canyon

by rebibi

The train has 2 water stops on the way from Silverton to Durango. Both are picturesque spots. The Animas River changes from one side to the other so everybody gets a good view. The canyon itself becomes very narrow but is rather short. We even saw 2 kajaks on the river through the canyon.

Fishing and rafting on the Animas river

by Martinewezel

The river runs right through the center of Durango and is well known for it's Trophy fish.
Fly fishing is very familiar.

Also rafting is popular here. In spring the river is rather wild, but in Summer the river is calmer which makes a rafting trip perfect for families and persons of all ages.

Mesa Verde National Park

by Easty

I am going to make a mention of Mesa Verde on this page. The entrance to the park is located about 38 miles west of Durango on US Route 160. Mesa Verde is the best kept Anasazi ruins. A great place to learn about ancient American culture. For more information, please go to my Mesa Verde page (Which will be completed on a later date)

How many beers in Durango?

by caffeine_induced78

"It's always worried me how many Oregonians have lost their lives fighting forest fires in Colorado." In the summer months crews of forest firefighters are shifted from state to state depending on where the worst fires are. In recent years an oddly high number of deaths fighting fires in Colorado were Oregonians.
"It's because in Colorado the fires behave differently. In Oregon they burn slower and hotter and in Colorado they move up the slopes in a hurry," replied Travis - my drinking buddy for the day.
If you are from the Western States of America you can discuss one of two topics in any small town bar and draw a look of concern and understanding - droughts and wildfires. Durango fit the bill nicely.
This town is a great place for spending three or four nights. Take in the historic buildings, ride the narrow-guage railroad, or visit nearby Mesa Verde National Park. Don't forget to strike up a conversation with the locals.
