Travel Tips for Durango

Indian artifacts

by goingsolo

The area was once inhabited by the Pueblo indians and many artifacts remain in the area. According to local or state law (Im not sure as this is how it was relayed to me) those who find artifacts on their property are allowed to keep them. This law, or policy, has caused a great deal of dissent.

San Juan National Forest

by goingsolo

Just north of Durango, the road crosses through the San Juan National Forest, which bears the same name as the mountain range. Its a beautiful drive, although the mountain passes are steep and narrow.

"Crazy about steam engines"

Durango is still a young town. It was established in 1881 as the hub of the Denver and Rio Grande rail system to transport precious metal ores from the mountains to the smelters in Durango.

Today, the famous Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauche Railroad makes the same breath-taking trip for thousands of tourists every year.

The town itself is not large. Compared to Silverton, this town is fresh, but less original. Sideways are no gravel roads anymore.
There are lots of nice shops on Main Avenue. The prices are correspondingly high.

The Station and it's museum at the end of Main Avenue are the heart of the town and certainly worth the visit.
We loved it!

It was the first town of that kind we visited.
Our sons remarked: "This is Disneyland Main Street, the genuine!"

If you are in the Durango, CO area, it's worth your while to stop into this town! You will be bombarded with jewelry shops, beef and elk jerky, steakhouses, coal trains, and fantastic people! Oh, beware of the Colorado Dirt Devils!!!
