Durango Winter Train Ride

by KimberlyAnn

We are going to be snowbirds this winter and will be passing through Durango sometime in early January. We love trains, and see that the train runs a trip Wed. - Saturday to Cascade Canyon and back. If you have any information about this, I would like to know if this is a nice winter trip, and whether they use the diesel or steam engine. Also would I have to make reservations well in advance for January, as we do not usually travel on a set schedule.

I have already visited their web site, but their information on the winter trip isn't very informative, nor do they say if during this off season period that one must reserve well in advance. We aren't sure when we will be heading out, so would probably be wanting to reserve only a week or two ahead. Your photo, looks inviting on your web page. Thanks.

Travel Tips for Durango

Beer Drinking Habits

by MainstreetAmerican

When it comes to beer, Durango is the place. Durango has many micro-breweries making and serving a wide variety of brews. If you like beer do not visit Durango without trying a few of its local flavors. I suggest Ska Brewing Co (most local restaurants and all local liquor stores carry varieties of Ska). If you get a chance stop by their brewery and tasting room. My faves of Ska are Buster Nut Brown and True Blonde. Other brands to try are Durango Brewing Company, Steamworks Brewing Company and Carver's Brewing Company. The locals typically drink the local beer.

A picture perfect November morning, as seen from the top of Animas mountain. Clear skies extend for miles, broken only by the whitecapped San Juans, which received a fresh dusting of powder the day before.

If you come to Colorado, try to visit Durango. You can visit Mesa Verde and Silverton the old mining town situated high in the mountains. Check into riding the steam locomotive railroad up to Silverton and back. This trip takes most of the day.
Mesa Verde will also take a full day for a visit.

DURANGO http://www.durango.org/

Established in 1881 as a frontier-mining town, Durango is close to the Four Corners area, where Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona meet. Breathtaking beauty, ranches, rolling hills and friendly people know their real gold is in scenery with year-round recreation such as: skiing, hiking, camping, fishing, rafting, kayaking and cycling. Watch for street fairs, musicians and art festivals.

Durango has several beautiful turn-of-the-century restored hotels complete with antique furnishings for get-aways.
