Travel Tips for Fort Collins
good intentions
by richiecdisc
Our tour time came up more quickly then I expected and soon we were being whisked off to the kettles and I lamented leaving our fun bartenders behind but my fears were soon allayed when our tour guide turned out to be equally entertaining. He kept us moving and his banter never became tiresome. I've done many brewery tours and this one is top notch. The highlight were the recently acquired wooden barrels from Rodenbach brewery in Belgium. They were being used to age La Folie, their knockoff of Rodenbach Grand Cru. As it turns out, their new brewer worked at Rodenbach and immediately my expectations for that beer raised. When our guide learned we had been there, he took a real liking to us and later when it turned out that La Folie was not on tap in the upstairs tasting room, he promised to open a bottle for us to try.
At the completion of the tour, he came out with a 750 ml corked bottle of their new masterbrew and popped it right in front of us so we were the first to get a taste. Our tour cohorts were a bit perplexed with the extremely tart flavor and he had wisely given them very small samples. I smiled as none of them wanted another shot and he shared the rest of the bottle with us. It was a marvelous refreshing tart complex beer much like its inspiration. It had been a really fun stop but fun times too must come to an end. Their infectious love for their jobs and the company had rubbed off on us too. We bought a six and of course, a bottle of La Folie. The latter was pricey, actually twice as much as a bottle of Grand Cru would cost here and it's imported from Belgium, but we figured we were kind of getting two for one on that one. Besides, I wanted to contribute what I could to such an admirable company. If I had to drink another bottle of La Folie to do it, that's just what I intended to do.
The CACHE La POUDRE RIVER
by Rich62
This beautiful mountain river flows through Fort Collins. Commonly called the Poudre River, its full name is French for "Hide the Powder", because early French explorers cached, or hid, their gunpowder above the banks of the river.
Take a drive up the Poudre River Canyon; you will find it much less full of traffic than the Big Thompson Canyon west of Loveland.
A Fort Collins tradition
by upthemountain about The Rainbow
This place has the best, freshest food in town, with many vegetarian dishes. Everything from fantastic traditional omelettes to mexican and asian flavours for breakfast or lunch (sometimes open for dinner as well). Salads, stir fry, pasta...
We used to go at least once a week.... and its one of the first places we hit when we are back in town visiting. There's a wonderful shady terrace in back... perfect for sunday brunch. The falafel plate... with feta and olives... mmmm
Breakfast Downtown
by HasTowelWillTravel about Choice City Butcher & Cafe
This restaurant is a quaint little place situated in the downtown area, which doubles as a butcher shop as well. They specialize in breakfast, though, and has been lauded by locals as the best in town. Many of the dishes feature meats which are created right in the butchery, including buffalo hash, pork sausage, and thick-cut smoked bacon. High rooftops, inlaid tabletops, and a friendly staff all make this a relaxing place to eat. It gets crowded though; at 9am it was ok, but by 10:30 everything was packed. Try one of their more special breakfasts; anyone can do eggs and toast. Their French toast is great, which was my breakfast of choice. The buffalo hash looked great, and their homemade sausage (had by my co-eater) was good. Orange juice was fresh, tasted like it was pulped on the spot.
Campus hang-out Pizzeria
by yooperprof about Woody's Woodfired Pizza
Woody's is conveniently located to the Laurel Street dorms and the Student Union at CSU. They have a nice outdoor patio and a comfy indoor bar as well. And I was very impressed when I came here late one night from a bar crawl and I was charged only one dollar for a gin and tonic!
Woody's pizza crust is the highlight here, as the name suggests. Calzones are good, too.
