I-70 from Grand Junction to Denver closes when it snows a lot. There are also wrecks and truck jacknifes that'll delay you quite a bit. I once had to wait about 6 hours near Vail because of one.
I would suggest taking I-40 to I-25. You still have the chance of encountering snow in parts of Arizona, New Mexico and near the Colorado State Line at Raton Pass, but it's less likely than that ultra-mountainous stretch of I-70.

HI, I am origanally from southern CA and have lived in CO now for 8 years. I dont think that I-70 is a bad route of you prepare ahead of time. Check the weather before you go and go to Colorado dept of transprotation website, get the number for road conditions and put it in your cell phone. The best rule of thumb I have found works best for me is to try to get over the mountain passes before the sun goes down. If you do this, unless a really bad storm is over the area, you should have smooth, but slower sailing. It is about 2 hours from grand Junction to the bottom/beginning of the passes. Always carry extra food and water, a flashlight, and a blanket just in case you have a wreck or slide off the road and need to wait for someone to come and get you. And remember, if you are unsure of conditions and unsure how to drive, just find a place to pull over and wait out the waether. Slow down and dont drive super fast and in a hurry. YOU will be fine. From San Diego to Ft. COllins you are looking at Approx 21 hours. Take breaks, drive safe and have fun in CO. Take care. ~Rain
Travel Tips for Fort Collins
Horsetooth Reservoir
by yooperprof
Horsetooth Reservoir is part of the excellent Latimer County Park System. It's also right up the road from my brother's house in Ft. Collins. Lots of recreational opportunities are available here, ranging from boating and waterskiing on the lake to hiking, biking and rock climbing in the surrounding hills.
Tubing on the Poudre River
by yooperprof
Follow SR 14 up the Poudre River canyon to find excellent places to launch your innertube. It's only about 20 miles north and west of the center of Fort Collins. Anset Watrous State Park, and the Roosevelt National Forest abut the Poudre as it cascades down the Rockies.
Devil's Backbone
by cheesecake17
This area has just opened for mountain biking now that the new loop has been added. While short (plan on about an hour), it is really a fun, beautiful and technically challenging trail.
The trail runs to the east of the "Devil's Backbone" and then cuts across a wash. Here the fun begins...a 5-10 minute climb to a gorgeous view from above the Backbone, with Long's Peak in the background.
How to get there....
Drive west on US 34. When you see a large concrete water tower on your right, you are getting close. Take a right on Wild Lane and park in lot about 1/4 mile ...
Spring Rolls Galore!!
by Sagespot about Young's Cafe
Vietnamese food in Fort Collins should only be had from Young's Cafe. A staple in the foothills region, Young's provides great service, with high quality food. If you're looking for something other than the standard run of Mexican restaurants and fast food joints, then go here!
I swear you won't be sorry! The Vegetarian Spring Rolls are devine!!! Couple that with a nice shrimp salad and I'm set for a week!!
Brighten Up Your Morning
by HasTowelWillTravel about Wild Boar Coffee
Wild Boar Coffee is a charming little coffeehouse just off of campus. It appears to be a converted home, lovely bungalow style building. It has a lot of charm, and the folks behind the counter can make some mean cups of coffee, as well as an eclectic selection of soups and sandwiches. For those not in a coffee mood, the place also offers local brews.
It is a great little place to relax away from downtown, enjoy the afternoon over a hot cup of coffee.
