Clear Creek runs right through the town from the snowmelt of the Rockies just to the west. For this reason it is some of the clearest and cleanest waters you will find in the Denver area. It was certainly not always so, it was in these waters where Gold was found and why Golden was started here. Digging for gold is not a clean activity, you dredge up the waters, you dig in the creek and stir up all kinds of sediments that get washed downstream. When the gold in this section of Clear Creek ran out the miners moved up the creek into the mountains. Now - runners and bikers move up and down the stream along the excellent path system that has been built in Golden. You can even ride your bike to Denver from here. First it was named Cannonball Creek and then named Vasquez River by French fur trappers before getting demoted to a creek.
The Golden Visitors Center is on the North bank of Clear Creek on Washington.
