Ranch living as told by Tammy
Tammy Shelafo is the co-owner of the Ranch House Bed and Breakfast. A Colorado native, Tammy grew up on the outskirts of Denver before moving to Gunnison. As of 2003, Tammy and her husband had been running the bed and breakfast for 3 years.
Earning a living as an innkeeper has been slow-going lately, due to the 9/11 tragedy and the more recent Colorado wildfires which contributed to keeping tourists at bay. Still, Tammy maintains a positive outlook as she gazes out into the wide open space afforded to those who live on county roads.
Tammy loves Gunnison and thinks its an especially good place for raising children. She misses living outside a big city and having all the creature comforts just minutes away. Its a 4 hour drive to Denver, to any shopping malls, Wal Marts and the like. But, Tammy tells me that this is a safe place 2 raise her two young girls. The recreational opportunities are another big draw. Mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding, etc.
The positives seem to outweigh the negatives for Tammy, as she sits in her country kitchen, youngest daughter on her lap. There's no where else she'd like to live but in this friendly valley 4 hours from any metropolis. But she'd like to visit Florida sometime. I promise to help her with some travel tips and we shake hands and part ways.
