More about The Ruby of Crested Butte - A Luxury B&B
Holy Smokes...what an excellent place!
It was our first experience at a bed & breakfast, as well as our first trip to Crested Butte. Andrea and Chris (the owners) are a young, inspirational couple that go to great lengths to make your stay as pleasant as possible. The room's interior design was soothing and so comfortable. We loved feeling as if we were at home, even in a foreign place. Kudos to Andrea and Chris for an amazing stay. AND...it isn't often that one finds a truly pet-friendly accomodation. The Ruby went above and beyond our expectations, and Andrea and Chris loved our dogs almost as much as we do!
We'll be back in the next month!

My family and I really enjoyed our stay. The beds were comfortable, the amenities were great and the breakfast was AMAZING!!! My only regret was that we could only stay one night.
I stayed at the Ruby with my two sons, 4 and 6, and my husband. The innkeepers did ask us to ensure that our children were quiet and well behaved, and they reserved the right to send us packing if they were not. My boys are both bright, active and LOUD, so as you can imagine, I was a little worried. We chose the suite, so we were separated from the main rooms, which helped. The boys came through, and really seemed to understand and respect the place. In the morning, they charmed the guests and innkeepers, so it went well.
We also really enjoyed Crested Butte itself. It is a cute town with nice shops and lots of winter activities. We all took a skiing lesson and we also tried ice-skating and sledding - VERY FUN.
Wonderful place to stay
We stayed at the Ruby for almost a week and really enjoyed ourselves. The room was clean and large (we booked the top room, suite-sized), and the breakfasts were phenomenal! Chris and Andrea are delightful, and they were very helpful with restaurant recommendations, arranging for ski passes and the like. They're fun and interesting to talk with, but not creepy and clingy like some B&B owners can be.
We brought our baby and, like another reviewer, were advised that he'd need to be on his best behavior so as not to bother other guests. It's not the sort of place where kids are running about. We used a nanny service during the day (Mountain Mamas, absolutely wonderful!) while we skied, and it worked out just fine because he's not very loud and we had the room that was sort of separated off from the others. Had we traveled during a busier time of year or had a louder/rowdier child, I think we'd have been worried he might bother other guests, but as it was our experience was incredible.
We prefer to stay in the town when we visit, as we like eating in those restaurants at night and it's just so easy to take the shuttle up to the mountain in the morning. The town of Crested Butte is charming, and the Ruby is conveniently located to everything. It's easy to walk wherever you'd want to go or, if you're going to the other end of town, to catch the free bus as the bus stop is about 2 blocks away.
We definitely will return and would recommend the Ruby. It's just a wonderful B&B.
A Great place to stay, with wonderful Hosts!!!
This was our first experience at a B&B, but I honestly do not know how it could have been better. From the warm welcome for four "Seniors" (Two older citizens, and our two old dogs), to the wonderful Breakfasts, and the Chocolate covered Strawberries bought to our room on Valentine's Day. If that was not enough, then consider the homemade Chocolate-Chip Cookies. The Snow that covered everything was like "Iceing on a Cake". Try this place, you'll like it!!!
We came from the Texas heat to cool Colorado and were greeted with the most wonderful hospitality from Chris and Andrea. Wish we could have stayed for a week! The breakfasts were delicious and the rooms were perfect! Chris and Andrea made us and our dogs, Sweet pea and Diego, feel so welcome! I would highly recommend this bed and breakfast to anyone staying in the Crested Butte/Gunnison area. They are the BEST! Thank you,Andrea and Chris, for everything!
Anthe and Joey
The Ruby is a very nice place that does everything above average. Perhaps our expectations were just higher given some of our other experiences and given the exceptionally good reviews the ruby gets. Our overall experience is that it is a four star or so kind of place - not five a star B&B.
Food - is good. Some things were excellent and some things were average. Everything was made from scratch and clearly they put effort into their breakfast. At times there was plenty of extras as well and at other times there was not. For big eaters (active skiers, bikers, etc that are drawn to CB) this may be a problem at times, but for most I would say this is a very solid breakfast.
Rooms - we stayed in two rooms. Both were clean with comfortable sheets and blankets. The beds are extremely soft, however. The rooms are also small - although this was not a big deal.
Dog Friendly - The owners clearly like dogs and encourage you to bring your dog with you. That said, it is probably the case that they have had some guests who probably don't like dogs that much and as a result there is a pretty extensive list of rules and regulations to follow. We did not even feel comfortable leaving our dog in our room for 20 minutes while we were in the hot tube. In general, this created a somewhat less than relaxing environment for us. Dogs are accepted, but we would not call this a dog place-- and that is ok as long as you know this.
Owners - Very nice people. They even went out of their way to pick up a cake for us for a birthday we were having.
Value - CB is not a cheap place in general and it is becoming more and more like Telluride and other expensive ski towns. We would call this an average value.
Cream of the Crop
We've stayed the Ruby before, and at other Crested Butte B&Bs ,and think the Ruby is the cream of the crop. The rooms are very clean and comfortable and the food is outstanding. Chris and Andrea, the owner/managers, split the cooking - he does the breakfasts and she makes a mean chocolate chip cookie for late afternoon rebounds. Chris's breakfasts leave you not interested in hearing about lunch until around 3 pm. Although we don't have a pet, we find that havng other's dogs around is fun and never a problem. Chris and Andrea are very sweet in the handling of special needs and make you feel relaxed during your stay. In the right weather, the stable of six "house" bicycles let you get around CB just like a local. The short walk to the bus stop lets you get to the mountain in the winter quickly and with no hassel. Great place.
Pale Carpets and Sweaty Feet
We visited Crested Butte in hot dry weather, with no mud on the streets..Despite these conditions,we were welcomed by a notice requiring the removal of shoes inside the building beyond the lobby/bicycle store. As the other guests did not seem to have socks or slippers, the carpets were effectively communal articles of clothing worn in a very warm environment!!
The other reviews seem to speak highly of the rooms, but our experience was that the practical aspect did not match up to the decorative aspect. When the bed could finally be located beneath the gross excess of decorative cushions and bedspreads,it proved excessively saggy. The surplus textiles also greatly restricted the already limited space. The claustrophobic effect was also aggravated by the failed sash window, which was propped open by a small piece of cast iron sculpture.
Altogether,we felt that the level of comfort was not consisitent with the status to which the establishment aspires .
Really recommend the Ruby
We chose the Ruby mostly because of its location (in the town of Crested Butte) and because it came across as dog-friendly on the website. Both location and dog-friendliness were great, and the breakfasts were also wonderful. Congenial conversation at breakfast didn't hurt either. Chris and Andrea were very friendly and helpful as well as knowledgeable about the area. We intend to go back!
The Ruby is Great!
Both Chris and Andrea were fantastic hosts from the first minute we arrived until we left. The breakfasts were "to die for" and the room and the entire facility were very clean and comfortable. We look forward to staying at the Ruby next time we go to Crested Butte.
