A Sense of History

My husband and I spent Columbus Day weekend 2007 in Ouray, Colorado. This was the last weekend that many of the shops and restaurants were open. The tourist summer season was coming to a close as the Fall colors peaked. Avid history buffs, we looked forward to overnighting at the hotel established in 1881. The lobby was classic with tin ceiling and historic paintings of Chief Ouray. The saloon had even more atmosphere with the polished brass rails and paintings. But there the atmosphere remained. The first floor (we stayed in room number 8) has two wings with shared toilet and bath. Unfortunately, little effort was put into decor: faded posters hang on the walls and dingy carpet lines the hallways. The rooms are small and the floors creak but that's due to the period the hotel was built. The bathrooms, however, were not very clean when we arrived and there was little evidence of servicing during our stay. I was pleased we did not freeze that night despite the autumn snow shower that blew through. The baseboard electric heater did it's job, but kept my husband awake with its creaking. Let's say, there is room for improvement in this hotel.
