My favorite mountain destination

by pkschack

Has anyone cycled from Pagosa to Silverton? Please tell me about your experience.

I guess you mean bicycled and I was on a motorcycle. I hope you are in good shape and use to the altitude. Coal Bank Pass and Molas Pass are both over 10,000 feet between Durango and Silverton. From Pagosa to Durango will be the easy part then it is uphill from Durango to the top of Coal Bank some down hill and then up again to Molas before the long decent into Silverton--and then of course you ride the train back or you have to do it back the other direction. Wonderful scenery, but make sure there are no storms forecast even in summer. I hit snow on Coal Bank in August one year and wiped out on my motorcycle.

Hi,

Yes I mean to do it on my bicycle. I mainly chose this route because of the altitude. I love a good challenge. My plan is to have my wife meet me in Silverton in the van and ride back the easy way.

Travel Tips for Pagosa Springs

The local population is a mix...

by whatson

The local population is a mix of hard boiled locals and more recent refugees from California, Texas, and New Mexico. Tourists are only semi welcome and tend to stand out. People struggle hard to make a living most of the time so it's appreciated if you spend some money here.

"Nice little mountain town to stop & visit"

Honestly, we didn't spend a lot of time in Pagosa Springs. We stopped here twice on our motorcycle trip to spend the night. There was a nice trail by the river and the Spa At Pagosa Springs looks like a really nice place to stay, they have a hotel and lots of different hot and mineral pools you can soak in overlooking the river. Pagosa Springs is beautiful with the mountains and great views.
