~ Pueblo, Colorado ~
The southernmost of four metropolitan areas along Colorado’s stretch of I-25, Pueblo is a medium-sized city with a modest downtown located at the edge of Colorado’s eastern plains. It is about about 25 miles east of the closest mountain range, but its location along US 50 makes it a launching point for scenic car trips across the southern half of Colorado. I have been through here with my parents and brother on three separate road trips. One time we even spent the night here at a standard chain hotel.
"I-25: The road to New Mexico"
Leaving Pueblo to the south on I-25, travelers start to notice a wider separation between the highway and the mountains than what one would find further north in Colorado Springs. About 35 miles south of Pueblo, before passing the town of Walsenburg, motorists will notice an odd sight off to the west. Resembling a hefty serving of whipped cream, the peaks of Great Sand Dunes National Park appear on the horizon. Eventually, near the town of Trinidad, the highway starts to reunite with mountains, gradually climbing to a height of 7,834 ft. as it crosses the New Mexico border at Raton Pass.
