More about Red Caboose Motel
An OUTATANDING experience!! Fantastic!!
We had and absolutely fabulous time last weekend at the Red Caboose Motel (11/1 & 11/2)!! We couldn't pull ourselves away and ended up staying an extra nite. Scott at the desk was extremely helpful with our very late arrival and the lovely, (too fashonable for Amishville, PA!) blond lady at the desk in the am was friendly and looked fabulous (especially for a Sunday morning!) and we chatted about NY shopping spots (a more likely habitat for the both of us, I think). I met the suprisingly worldly and cosmopolitan owner later in the afternoon and we had interesting conversation about cities we had both lived in and dreams of settling down in a place like Strasburg, PA. The room (oops, caboose) was extremely clean by any standards (my family ownes 2 hotels and I am extremely pickey). The sheets were fresh & creased & both they and towels were from a linen service. The caboose was sooooo cute and cozy and could not have been better appointed. We were along the road side of the train and watched and listened all nite to the clip clop of the many Amish with their buggies and the Motel's own buggy giving rides to the guests and visitors. It was beyond beautiful. One of the highlights to theis fabulous weekend was the resturant car. The atmosphere was authentic and it was very easy to imagine you are on a moving train with the train sounds and music they play. The waitress was an absolute gem and the food was OUTSTANDING!! I am so glad I didn't listen to those bad reviews!!! Those people are off their rocker!! We will never forget our weekend at the Red Caboose and we will certainly be returning asap!! PS. KIDS WOULD LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!
Raunchy -- Think old trains, bad decorations, used for farm animals
We arrived at 3:45pm to an envelope taped to the outside of the office.
The office was closed and our CC was charged. The room was smoked in after we specifically asked for non-smoking. We were not given a caboose but an old sleeping car that had very little done to convert it. My children were upset about the number of spider webs. The fold down beds were just foam over wood. It was dark and not very private.
We are huge Train Fans but were very disappointed. We left at 4:00pm and went to another hotel, which was fantastic. I had to file fraudulent CC report with my bank to get the charges reversed, as they will not call me back. I have also filed with the Better Business Bureau.
I had booked a whole car for my family for a weekend getaway in September 2002. We arrived on Friday night. Surprise, there were cobwebs all over the place. About 9 pm, the toilet backed up all over the place. My husband and one daughter (+2 kids left). The repairman had been drinking and actually no help at all. The toilet continue to back up 2 more times that night. Saturday morning there was no water and for the rest of the day. We were promised another weekend to replace the one we lost but as of this day, nothing has been replaced.
We literally lost the weekend and our money.
Nice place but a little overpriced
We had reserved the Honeymoon Caboose four months in advance and when we arrived were told there were mechanical problems and were being moved to a regular caboose. They owner was very kind and did refund my money for the difference in price. We didn't know what to expect after reading some of these reviewes, but we found the caboose to be very well kept, very clean, and very roomy. Although we were not very impressed with the dining car as it looked to be dirty and smelled like kerosene, so we opted not to eat there. Being railroad buffs, we understood the ambiance of the Caboose. If you want a Hilton type atmosphere, don't stay here. We also enjoyed watching the Amish and their buggies go right by the Motel. In summary, the Red Caboose Motel was nice, but was overpriced for a family of two.
Don't fall into this trap!
In 2002 I booked a reservation for my family and I to stay at The Red Caboose for a week. Less than a week before our vacation was scheduled, Scott called from The Red Caboose to tell me that our reservation will have to be cancelled due to a water problem at their site. After investigating further, I found out that the Agricultural Department shut down the Red Caboose because of very high nitrates in the water and this was an ongoing problem for them that they had refused to recify months back until they were forced to shut down. Needless to say we were extremely disappointed and had to scramble to make other vacation plans. Scott did tell me that my money (I booked it on my credit card) would be refunded. After getting my next credit card statement, my refund was not there. After numerous phone calls to him for about 2 to 3 weeks (I was very nice to him on the phone), my money was refunded to me. I also got my credit card company involved and had to send them all my documentation to prove that I had made the reservation and to tell my story to them.Even though I did not get "burned" in this transaction (I consider myself one of the lucky ones), I would NEVER book another reservation with them and get trapped like that again!I read that the motel did change owners within the last year, but unfortunately for them, the reputation of the previous owners has spoiled it for any future business.
They will rip you off! Beware!!!
We had to cancel our reservations because of family issues. We were told by the manager (Wayne) that they would refund our money. We paid by a debit card (BIG mistake) which menat the money was taken directly out of our checking account when we made the reservation. It is now almost two months later and we still haven't gotten our refund. I have made several calls and every time I get that they will refund it right away. They can't be trusted. Beware!!!!
Illegal Business Practice
This is what I sent to The Lancaster Chamber of Commerce... We made a reservation for a one night stay 4/3. I made the reservation on 3/31 with a credit card. We had to cancel the reservation. I called at noon on Friday to cancel. I was informed that I would be charged the $79.95 for the room. I asked why that was and was told I didn't give a "48" hour notice. First of all a 48 hour notice is crazy and I was never informed of that policy. They offered an onsight credit and I told them I wanted the charge taken off of my card, they refused. I will of course protest it with my credit card company and win, but do you condone this type of business practice? We have spent many a weekend in your area but are now questioning our need to come back to your area. I own my own business and never treat a customer like this... Bad Business. Bernie Wright
My son's fourth birthday
I got a bit scared when I read these reviews (the day before we were to spend the night at the Red Caboose Motel). I expected the worst and told my wife to prepare for a disaster. My son is a train fanatic and we decided to break the suburban birthday circuit and spend the night in a caboose to celebrate his fourth birthday. Yesterday my wife, 5-year old daughter, son and I drove down to Strasburg. I was expecting something like a dilapidated trailer park but found the motel charmng and much nicer than even they advertise on their website. The setting is beautifully located among Amish farms and a healthy walk from the Strasburg RR attraction. Even us non-train enthusiasts, I schlep to work on NJ Transit everyday (talk about run down cars fit for livestock-re: other reviews), had a good time. Both of my chidlren loved the pig, donkeys, calf and goats (including a kid) on the premises. My son, who we had planned the trip for, loved every second of it. When he woke up he told us he was in his caboose and has asked to go back when we returned home. It is a unique experience and the cabooses are very cozy.
TIME OF OUT LIFE !!!!
My family and i had a blast ,the caboose was so much fun ,feeding the animals on premises, taking the horse & buggy ride thru town ,dayout with thomas , 3 yrs later he tells all his friends about it ,we are thinking of going again ,we're never to old to enjoy the town and the red caboose ! ty ,everyone was very friendly here and you can not go wrong with the price ! be back soon !!!
just for kids
We read very negative thisngs about the Red Caboose and we stayed there in June 2004. It was not the Hampton, but it was very clean and our two boys loved the fact that they got to sleep in a Caboose. We had no problems and would stay again just for our kids.
