"Las Animas County Courthouse"
I liked this town and would like to explore it more thoroughly.
Now this is a big, substantial looking courthouse. The Las Animas County Courthouse was built sometime in the late 1880s to around 1900. There is a nice statue representing the Statue of Liberty on the courthouse grounds that is dedicated to the Boy Scouts of America.
The old jail was built around the same time, and using the same style of architecture, as the courthouse. It is located right next door. I think both buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.
"Trinidad History Museum"
The Trinidad History Museum consists of the Santa Fe Trail Museum, the Baca House, the Bloom Mansion, and the historic gardens.
Stop here for the wonderful Rino's restaurant!!
We were on our way back to Houston (Texas) from our vacations in Utah, when we picked Trinidad, in Southeast Colorado as a convenient stop along I25 Freeway. We got a room at a motel (Trinidad Inn) and went on reconnaissance for something to eat in town. At first, it looked really bleak. Although downtown Trinidad, a small town, has beautiful century old buildings and cobbled streets, most are empty and for sale (the reason for this was obvious when we drove off the next day: there is a Wallmart in Trinidad). One nice stone building on Main street, however, looked well kept and there was a sign saying "restaurant, open". So we went in. What a wonderful surprise!! Rino's is a fantastic restaurant which is worth stopping at even if you have nothing to do in this little town along the freeway. If at least, you need an overnight stay on your travels along I25, pick Trinidad just for a great diner at a bargain price.
