Ski at Beaver Creek. It was terrific because once off of the shuttle you can easily access the locker area then it's off to the ski lifts.
Vail was horrible due to the excessive walking to obtain a ski lift. At Beaver Creek, the people (all nationalities) were really nice and the shopping, and iceskating area.
Piney Lake
by goingsolo
This is about 40 minutes from Vail but worth the drive. It is possible to drive to the lake and catch an awesome view of the Gore Range as a backdrop.
To get there, take the frontage road north of I-70 west from the main Vail exit #176, which leads to Red Sandstone Road. Turn left onto Forest Road 700 and the lake is at the end of the road
Great Italian Restaurant & Wine Bar
by MM212 about La Bottega
A casual place, but very authentic, la Bottega offers a great selection of Italian wines accompanied by pizza, or other small Italian plates, or a full Italian menu. The front of the restaurant is a nice lounge and bar, while dining tables occupy the other side. Definitely worth a meal or two in Vail.
Great Summer Destination too

"Vail - will take your breath away"
What a great weekend get away! Beautiful views, friendly locals, good food.
Stayed at Antlers Inn in Lionshead - Vail. It was very nice - not luxury but very nice and close walk to the Ski Gondola.
VAIL, COLORADO
by Pawtuxet
Vail is a town built for skiing. The mountains are amazing...Behind our lodge was this pristine stream...so pure and fresh.
We travelled to Vail to visit our son, who decided to work out there and enjoy some premier skiing for a couple of years. He had a great time...snowboarding, biking, meeting hundreds of new people. (He tends bar) The town is pristine. Almost looks like you are in Switzerland. It gave me a Disney feeling, tho. Very artificial and expensive. The countryside and the drive through the mountains was breathtaking. You just need to be there for skiing...or hiking.
