Going to Mystic, CT in September--Wanted to know if there is an inexpensive hotel outside of Mystic going towards Newport, RI as it seems staying right in Mystic is a lil on the expensive side.
Also wondering if there is enough activity to easily last 1 complete day in Mystic.

I was in Mystic and stayed overnight in Groton(?) at an inn about 20 mins away from downtown Mystic. You can walk around Mystic Seaport area (shops & restaurants), go to the aquarium, and visit the history museum. There are some shops near Mystic Pizza too. I do think that one day is enough in Mystic though. You wouldn't need to stay overnight, depending on where your next destination is.

There is a Comfort Inn in Mystic that is reasonably priced, I think around $80 a night, which isn't bad these days in my opinion. Not near the water but just short drive in. Nicer than staying i Groton from what I've seen.
Visit the Mystic Seaport. If you cannot attend the entire Museum, browse the shop and watch the free intro in the Welcome Center so you can plan to see it on your next trip. Getting stuck on the quaint Main St while the drawbridge was up, and watching the boats pass.
The winds and waves have decided us, and we call a meeting with Jo Jo. We agree to share and share alike. Getting the next map, we show our destination to be Sag Harbour on Long Island Sound. The skies brighten, but there is not much trust between us and them, and there is still much plotting. We make Sag Harbour as evening falls, and head into town. The wind sends the crew in for warmer gear, and the merchants are richened.
When travelling, I always take a journal as well as my camera. Write in it faithfully each day. Then when you are home, re-write it with an ear for adventure. Make characters. Ray a farmer from Pennsylvania became "Rey, a tall thin Spainard, dark complected, with long black hair, and a stiletto beard."
Wear comfortable shoes as there is alot of walking between the marina and the village and other sites of interest.
If you're going in hot weather, wear a visor, sunglasses or carry a parasol. It can get very bright on the water.
Also take some bottled water in case you get thirsty.
Located on the west side of the drawbridge (i.e. the side closest to Rhode Island), S&P Oyster Company overlooks the river and gives diners great views of all the boats going by. It also happens to serve great seafood. If you like softshell crab sandwiches this is definitely the place.
