Good place for families
by TripAdvisor Member 79spider
Great price/value for families. The location is perfect for visiting the Seaport and Aquarium. The Crayola room we stayed in was a little worn, but very serviceable. There is a VCR - bring tapes for the kids. Our boys (2 and 3) used the kids table for coloring and played "fort" in the large closet. The pool was clean and maintained, but the surrounding floor tiles were extremely slippery and the pool towels were too small. The staff was helpful and friendly. The attached restaurant was OK.
Good Value, Great for Kids

My daughter, grandaughter (age 4) and I spent a couple of "girls' getaway" days in Mystic. This hotel is right across the street from Mystic Village and the Mystic Aquarium. It also has a Bickford's Grille attached, so is convenient especially for breakfast. When we arrived (with a prepaid reservation that I had booked online) I asked if we could have a "Crayola" room, and although technically they are not supposed to give it without prior planning, they let us have it. This is a room decorated for children's taste with lots of Crayola motifs. Also has a child-size table and chairs, and is conveniently located on the first floor just off the lobby and near the indoor pool. The hotel was clean, plenty of towels in the room, and 24 hour coffee available in the lobby (although it wasn't really very good). The only criticism I can make is that the walls are very thin, so noise can be a factor. I would recommend this hotel to people with children who want to be close to the Aquarium; and it's just off Route 95, so easy to find.
Good value for money

Used this as a base to explore Mystic and Rhode Island, and found it really great value for money. Our room was clean, good storage space, and there's even a swimming pool - all this for around 90 dollars a night (including the various taxes). No breakfast, but there's a fantastic place just down the road called Kitchen Little which does the most amazing omelettes, pancakes etc.
Great price! Very conveinent!

I got the hotel at a great price and the BEST part was that it was so close to the sights I wanted to see! (Mystic Seaport, Mystic Aquarium and only a short drive to Foxwoods and Downtown Mystic)
The hotel was clean and even has an indoor pool. (I wish I had stayed longer so I could have taken advantage of it!)
Stay away

We stayed here with another couple. Both our rooms smelled musty. They had dehumifiders running in them. We complained and was told that they would give us 10% off our next visit. They could give me 100% off my next visit and I would not stay there.
Great rate...for winterbreak

My family and I stayed for 2 days. When we arrived we were sent away, as the rooms were not ready...We went to lunch at a terrible pizza shop down the street. Came back a few hours later, Our room was ready but, there were no towels for the pool or for our room. Although in fairness the maytag man was behind us while we were checking in. Check in was easy no service to speak of...but was painless. Upon entering the room I go what I expected 2 queen beds. Tv patio
small table and a writing desk. I reserved a room with a whirlpool. The bathroom could use some help. hair along the edge of the whirlpool..not belonging to our family!...a TERRIBLE caulk job. Housekeeping was Very Slow and just ok. I asked for extra pillows as they provide only 2 per bed. When I reieved them they were left on the tabe? (maybe because that is were I left the note with a tip!?)Kids loved the pool!
The rate was excellent!! You do get what you pay for!
Excellent for the money

I can't believe some of the negative reviews I read before seeing for myself. People...it's a Howard Johnsons, not the Hilton. It was reasonably priced, clean, had many ammenities (coffee in room and lobby, microwave and refrigerator, iron & ironing board, hair dryer, safe, and a nice warm indoor pool)all in a budget motel. Can't beat this value for families with children especially. Would definitely go back and probably will. It is not as close to the aquairium as they say, however. It is not across the street as stated. It is walking distance, however maybe not with small children. I have gone to many places where economy means that the rooms have NOTHING. This has a lot for the price. Also having the Friendly's across the parking lot and the Bicksfords attached made it very convenient for easy fast meals. Good job HoJo.
Better than expected

I have to agree with the last reviewer--I can't believe the negative reviews. Because we weren't arriving in Mystic until very late at night and heading to the tourist attractions very early the next morning, I wanted to spend the minimal amount on a room. A discount code brought the cost down to a remarkably low rate (in comparison to others in the area), so I took it, not expecting much more than a bed and a shower. We were pleasantly surprised to find the room immaculately clean (no dust bunnies under the bed even!) and nicely appointed and the staff very friendly. My daughter ended up spending hours in the pool (heated indoor) because it too was clean and very well maintained. There is no breakfast included at the hotel, but kids eat breakfast and lunch for free in the attached restaurant and there is free coffee in the lobby and a coffeemaker and a microwave in the room. My one and only complaint would be the small parking lot. The only spaces left when we arrived were way at the back of the hotel, a secluded--though well-lit--dead end that made me uncomfortable (being a woman traveling with a young daughter.) So instead, we parked at the front of the hotel in the restaurant parking lot. It seemed ok, as no one complained or made us move. I would definitely stay there again.
Great Ho-Ho's, bad pillows.

We read all the reviews, and must agree with the last reviewer, IT'S A HOWARD JOHNSONS, not a Hilton. The room was clean, AC and heat worked well. The pool was great. The weather was not good when we were there, but you cannot blame the hotel for that. The hotel is located right off the exit ramp of I-95 and there are restaurants within walking distance from McDonalds to Brickfords to Friendlys, something for most everyone. The only complaint my wife and I had were the pillows, even when given extra pillows, they were flat and junky. Otherwise we had a great time and will return but will bring our own pillows. Also, note the coupon in the travelers guide at the CT visitors center we got $25 off each night we stayed. It aided in paying for a few seafood and steak dinners.
Convenient, Good Price

We stayed 2 nights at the Howard Johnson's in Mystic. The kids loved the indoor pool which was very clean. Our room was also very clean and conveniently connected to a restaurant and also next door to Friendlys restaurant. We were right across the street from the aquarium and 15 minutes from Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.
It is definitely not a Hilton type hotel, but you are paying a discounted price to stay in a budget type hotel. We would definitely stay again for the pool and convenience.
