Genuine Hitchcock furniture throughout the Inn

Good (3.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on September 21, 2010

This old Inn takes up almost an entire city block. The parking is behind the building and we had to go through a small alleyway to get to the back. Once back there, we noticed there is plenty of room for parking. Thankfully we didn't have much luggage to carry up. We were given a room with a King size bed on the second floor for $69 + tax. The halls are long, carpeted and decorated with pictures. In order to use the elevator we had to ask the clerk at the desk to take us up - we haven't been in an old elevator like that in a long time. The key was an old hang down key, that the clerk had to retrieve for us.
The room and the bathroom were clean. The bathroom had an old pedestal sink and the tub had a shower. The towels were not real fluffy but they were clean and plentiful. The bed was covered with a bedspread and we couldn't find extra pillows with cases on them. The TV worked fine - but there was not lighting on both sides of the bed. Just a light on the side by the bathroom.
What was incredibly interesting was that all the furniture was Hitchcock Furniture. We knew the Hitchcock Factory that made the furniture was in nearby Riverton, CT but never dreamed we would see so much of it. There were wonderful small, very attractive green Hitchcock chairs in the hallways. They all had the insignia on the back. We had a great rocking chair in our room with the Hitchcock designs and insignia. Even the headboard on the bed was Hitchcock.
In the lobby they had a computer to use for free Internet access. The lobby was cozy and interesting.
Breakfast started a 7 AM - they had coffee and orange juice. They offered cold cereal, bagels with cream cheese and toast, blueberry and cornbread muffins. They had two small apples in a basket on the table. There was no jam for the bagels. The room had brick walls, there were lots of tables and chairs and was carpeted.
There was not a lot of traffic in the town of Torrington and it was located in a good place for us to finish up a day trip to Granville, Massachusetts.

Unique Quality: We enjoyed viewing the Hitchcock Furniture. Since the Factory is now gone and out of business I would imagine the furniture would increase in value. It's very easy to spot - if you are looking for it in the homes of people you visit, etc.

Directions: Right on Main Street, but the entrance to the back parking is a tiny alley.
