Captain Stannard House
"Ghosts" means Great Hosts
I spent a pleasant Saturday night -- none of the six phantasms said to haunt the Captain Stannard House made an appearance -- and enjoyed Sunday breakfast before venturing to the beach, which is conveniently located close to the B&B (though not, I think, within a block as advertised, but perhaps I went the wrong way). Jim and Mary Brewster are warm and engaging hosts, and provide some extra touches which I found most welcome. The challenge for me was the stairs. The CSH is actually two or more buildings which have been joined to create the space for nine guest rooms, and there are a LOT of stairs. If you can get past that, the beds were comfortable, the air conditioning worked well, and there was plenty to do in the Great Room, from playing pool to working a jigsaw puzzle to reading in front of the fireplace. There is also a splendid porch with rockers, fans, and a view over the lawns if you'd rather be outdoors.
Unique Quality: The homemade treats -- mine was a lemon bar, while the adjacent room got brownies -- were delicious.
