Travel Tips for Bear
New Castle County is where Bear is. The county is the northernmost county in Delaware.
The county seat is over in Wilmington and the weighted-center of the state population is in this county. It is by far the most populated with the most traffic and the most industry in the state. Luckily Bear is in a more rural section of the county and is spared some of the commotion associated with large population areas.
William Penn established the Colony of Delaware in this county before the region became a state.
The county is about 500 square miles with a population of 500000.
Lums Pond State Park
This is an excellent park for outdoor activities: horse-back riding, hiking, birding, fishing, swimming.
Lums Pond has a supervised beach and boat rentals (kayaks, row boats).
There is a limited access boat launch for your boat if you tow it to the park.
There is a nature center where you can find information on indigenous species to be found in the park. There are pavilions and picnic tables and standing grills for those who want to picnic.
Cabins are available in the park's camp grounds.
There are playgrounds and restrooms and ball courts/fields; snack bar and community center.
It is just about as complete a park as you will find on the east coast of USA.
to get there:
it is southwest of Bear, DE on route 896, south of route us40
